Bjork Attacks Kiwi: "B, Don't Do This"
But B totally did this. Icelandic strangeling Bjork is known for once getting violently happy while beating the shit out of a British reporter in 1996, a video clip you really must see. Yesterday, she administered a punitive shirt-ripping to a New Zealand photographer who dared to photograph her arrival at Auckland International Airport. ""I took a couple of pictures and I got about three or four frames of her ... and as I turned and walked away she came up behind me, grabbed the back of my black skivvy and tore it down the back." An unnamed Bjorkian companion reportedly pleaded with the tiny terror to cease and desist, begging, "B, don't do this." Airport authorities will review video footage if the police request it, so we can only hope another clip emerges. [via]
Travelzoo Picks: $99 Swissotel Chicago, $705 LA/SF to Auckland, $100 NYC to Boston, $199 NYC to LA, $699 5-Night Rio Air+Hotel
$99 Swissotel Chicago: This reduced rate at the SwissĂ´tel Chicago is chiefly attractive because it's valid on holiday weekends -- both Memorial Day and July 4th. Otherwise it's hobbled by numerous blackout dates through July, but still, it's not a bad location at all for a Windy City holiday.
$705 LA/SF to Auckland: Undercutting a recent sale from Qantas, Air New Zealand is offering fares to $705 round-trip fares to Auckland from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu. Fares are goof for any day in June only; book by June 5.
$100 NYC to Boston: JetBlue's selling $50 fares each way between Boston and New York all summer long. The $50 cheapie fare is most often found on midweek departures, but the sale terms could change (and this sale could end at any time) as seats get sold out.
$199 NYC to LA: American Airlines is hosting its own domestic sale covering the immediate future. One great deal in particular if you've made no post-Memorial Day plans -- $199 round trip between Newark and Los Angeles, only good for weekend after next. Depart June 2-3 and return June 5-6; book by June 2.
$699 5-Night Rio Air+Hotel: Need I even say that the default Copacabana-close hotel is crap, but this package still has its merits -- particularly since the $699 price is good not only for Miami departures as usual, but also from New York. The base price depends on travel dates through December of course, so the cheap times involve boiling in Brazilian heat, but that's no surprise. Other departure cities and better hotels are available for price bumps.

Sherman Picks: $803 LA to Auckland, $438+ Paris & Europe
$803 LA to Auckland: This is just the lowest fare of a larger Qantas US/Oz/NZ sale hawked by Travelocity. Others include $963 LA to Sydney; other West Coast fares go up from there, with a few East Coast options as well (New York to Sydney is $1,263). Purchase by June 5 for various travel dates through September 21.
$438+ Paris & Europe: This "early bird" sale from Air France covers most of their US departures and many European destinations. The basic deal is $438 for airfare to Paris from New York, Boston, Philadelphia, or Washington DC. For another $60, you can later continue to any of 60 other European cities, effectively turning the Paris leg into a "free stopover." Purchase by May 22 for travel between October 15 and March 31, 2007.

SideStep Picks: $798 L.A. to Sydney or Auckland, $325 Seattle or Vegas to Miami
$798 L.A. to Oz or NZ: This Qanatas sale isn't quite as nice as a few other fares we've recently catalogued, but it lasts a bit longer and hits the shoulder season and bizarro-land Southern Hemisphere winter. Fly from Los Angeles to Sydney or Auckland for $798, or pay more to go from/to other cities on either side of the fare. Book by March 12 for travel May 1 to June 8 and July 24 to September 21 (Australia), or for travel April 1 to June 8 and August 7 to September 30 (New Zealand). Expect about $180 in additional taxes and fees.
$325 Seattle or Vegas to Miami: Though Orbitz is flogging this as an AirTran sale, you can search for all airlines and get the same prices among several carriers. There are also several more possible combos beyond the Seattle, Las Vegas, and Miami trio. Book by March 9 for travel through August 23.

Wagamama in New Zealand

British noodle chain Wagamama has expanded into New Zealand with an Auckland location. For those who haven't had the chance to try their (relatively) cheap noodles and stirfries served at lightning fast speed like some kind of tasteful, healthy fast food wonderland, Itchy Manchester explains what it's all about.

Kiwi Nightlife Roundup
The Guardian has a solid survey of New Zealand nightlife, listing the usual suspects in Auckland and Wellington but making a few commendable suggestions (mostly restaurants) in Christchurch and Dunedin. Of particular note is the stalwart Galatos in Auckland, an immense three-level venue drawing the best in local and globetrotting rock, punk, dance, hip-hop, and most any other act you care to absorb (international DJs too of course). No hobbits allowed.
