Vegetarians with a craving for Indian food will find no trouble finding suitable nosh in London, where many restaurants specialize in the cooking of Southern India. Here's a selection of favorite local addresses where vegetarians can get their dosas. The food at these places is so good that even the carnivores will forget what they're missing.

1

Woodlands

37 Panton St
London, Greater London, SW1Y 4, UK

The well-established Woodlands restaurants mini-chain has generally well-made South Indian vegetarian cuisine at its four London locations. The decor is simple and modern decor and the menu is large -- you can't go wrong with a thali containing a dozen different dishes to keep your palate on its toes. [link]

Sagar

157 King St
Hammersmith, Greater London, W6 0, UK

This South Indian vegetarian restaurant gets rave reviews for food and a contemporary ambiance. Steamed rice cakes with sambar and coconut or chili chutney, samosas, curries, stuffed dosa, and other dishes are well-prepared and copious -- and the bill is reasonable indeed. There's another location in Hammersmith. [link]

Ravi Shankar

Camden Town, Greater London, NW1 2, UK

A favorite address on Drummond Street (home to a number of vegetarian Southern Indian places), Ravi Shankar has occasionally testy service but a range of reliably good dishes and daily specials. Regulars rave about the fresh coconut chutney. They do take-away and catering. And do make note that they aren't licensed, but you're welcome to BYOB. [link]
