Your Eco-Friendly Guide to the District

ecofriendly%20guide%20dc.jpgYuppies across the District are embracing the green movement faster than Republican sycophants are moving to endorse newly-crowned party king John McCain. Otherwise known as the Whole Foods mafia, DC's organic-eating, nature-loving, yoga-practicing set is fueling the city's booming, eco-friendly retail market. Where can you find these environmentally conscious citizens? For a roadmap of their whereabouts, check out the following locations. Suggestions of further crunchy hippie hangouts welcome via the comments or tips.

1

Yes! Organic Market

658 Pennsylvania Ave SE Washington, DC 20003

Yes! Organic Market

They say you are what you eat. If that's the case, shoppers who frequent Eastern Market's Yes! Organic Market must cost a pretty penny. The tiny shop offers a surprisingly diverse selection of all-natural goods and even has a wine section, but it's not cheap. Nevertheless, it's still the best organic option for Whole Foods-less Hill residents. (Photo) [link]

Green Pets

Green Pets

The store formerly known as Pet Essentials in Logan Circle has offered natural, eco-friendly options for pets since its opening nearly a decade ago. According to the ">Washington Post owner Linda Welch plans to open six more GreenPets locations in the DC metro area. With the environment taking top billing in the papers lately, expect news-obsessed Washingtonians to flock to the stores. Bikram Yoga

The web site of this Dupont yoga center says their Bikram series was "tailored for the Western person and specifically for our cultural problems of job stress, overeating, bad posture and aggressive lifestyles." Acolytes practice Bikram yoga in a heated environment to accelerate the rate of change in the body and eliminate toxins. During the summer, the studio offers yoga in the park. [link]
