NY Mag Reporter Plans to Expose the Dark Forces Behind Hatred of Park Slope

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

lynnharrisslope.jpgNew York Magazine has an article in the works that aims to examine why so many people hate Park Slope. The writer of the story, Lynn Harris, penned a similar piece for Time Out Kids last summer, but don't worry, her new article is going to be totally different. In fact, after her last Slope opus came out, Harris was upset with the "snarky and anti-Slope" tone of the piece and claimed that it had been "edited rather beyond recognition." This time around, Harris, who is herself a happy Park Slope parent, has an agenda. She's going to take down the Park Slope haters.

Harris wrote two posts on the Daily Slope messageboard that made her major pro-Slope bias abundantly clear. Harris was supposedly seeking interview subjects with differing opinions about the Slope, but when some of the Slope residents on the board questioned the idea of her story, Harris wrote again to assure her neighbors that she is "a 14-year [Park Slope] resident who loves it here." She revealed that she blames blogs for all the "SlopeHate" and that she herself can't really understand why people bash her neighborhood "and not other gentrified, Bugaboozled parts of Manhattan." In her posts on the Daily Slope, Harris wonders if "envy" may be the thing behind anti Park Slope sentiment. She says she "jumped at the chance to take this assignment" because she thinks she can be "more than fair to the Slope" and wants to include as many of the opinions of her fellow Slopers as possible. Harris obviously wants her piece in New York to be a huge slap in the face to all the Park Slope haters.

At first glance, Harris' upcoming article might seem to be another whiny rant from a Sloper who can't understand why more people dont appreciate gentrification, but I think it will be much more amazing than that. It'll be fun to watch a walking Slope stereotype try to wrap their mind around all the ill will other New Yorkers have for them. Will she stare deep inside her soul and have a life altering epiphany? Will her head explode? Or will she merely chat about this with the other folks in line at Connecticut Muffin and conclude that the rest of us are all a bunch of idiots? Stay tuned to find out!
