Cow Palace Headed for Slaughter?
Thursday, February 28, 2008
The Cow Palace, one of the Bay Area's oldest concert venues, isn't just in danger of being put out to pasture: plans are afoot to have it torn down for a mixed-use project that includes housing, a bank, and a grocery store. Built in 1941 by the WPA, the structure is owned by the State of California, and under current plans would be sold to Daly City. As you might expect, a group of activists is working to Save the Cow Palace, in part because of its history: the Beatles, Elvis, and Evel Knievel all appeared there, and so did JFK, for a 1960 that was a first step in establishing the Peace Corps.
