Project Runway Guide to New York

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

prnewyorkmain.jpgAfter tomorrow's Project Runway finale, distressed design fans can still get their fashion fix by paying a visit to the city the show calls home. In New York, you can buy clothing made by Project Runway's designers, sign up for a class at Parsons, get fabric in the Garment District, and best of all, stalk Tim Gunn. After all, when you rewind the show on your DVR it's pretty clear that he's winking at you and coyly saying that you two crazy kids could "make it work." Don't worry, I saw it too. So, get out there, get dressed to impress, and go get your man! Or, you know, just leave Tim alone to sulk and do some fun fashionista sightseeing with a few friends.

Sistahs of Harlem @ Pieces of Harlem

228 W 135th St
New York, NY 10030

Designer Carmen Webber may have been Auf'd from the show early this season, but her Sistahs of Harlem collection is apparently a favorite of celebs such as Alicia Keyes, Katie Couric, Erykah Badu, and Julia Roberts. You wouldn't think that group would be making many of the same fashion choices. Sistahs of Harlem is on sale at this Uptown boutique. [link]

New Gotham Apartments

520 W 43rd St
New York, NY 10036

This "high rise luxury apartment rental" is used as a dorm for the contestants on Project Runway. Online reviews make it sound as though the level of luxury in the apartments is questionable. One former resident complained of broken elevators, thieving neighbors, and shoddy gym equipment. Scandalous! [link]

Cosa Nostra @ Kirna ZabĂȘte

96 Greene St
New York, NY 10012

This upscale women's couture emporium is the place in New York to buy clothes from neck-tattoo-sporting, season-three winner Jeffrey Sebelia and his Cosa Nostra label. [link]

Rami Kashou @ Curved

83 Mercer St
New York, NY 10012

Season four finalist and drapery master Rami Kashou has items from his collection on sale at this year-old SoHo boutique. Based on all the info I could find, Rami seems to be the only one of the remaining Project Runway contestants who has any of his clothes in stores. Perhaps this is a spoiler? It also might mean absolutely nothing. Stay tuned to find out! [link]

Mood Fabrics

225 W 37th St, 3rd Floor, New York NY 10018

This fabric shop near Parsons is where the Project Runway designers and pretty much every other fashion professional in New York shop for supplies. Head here to find swatches, bolts, and, if you're lucky, Austin Scarlett. [link]

London Terrace

9th Ave & 23rd St, New York, NY 10011

In an interview with USA Today, Project Runway design guru Tim Gunn revealed that he lives in this luxury apartment complex in New York's gay Mecca, Chelsea. The building is so exclusive that even Gunn reported enduring a nine month waitlist before getting an apartment here. Gunn says he rents here and can't afford to buy. Sounds like someone needs to hit Bravo up for a raise. [link]

Parsons

560 7th Ave
New York, NY 10018

Project Runway's home base is the best place to get schooled about fashion in New York. Parsons also offers courses on interior design. Tim may not be a professor here anymore, but he and the show are still a huge presence at the school. Last summer, Parsons students had to enter through a side door -- shooting for the fourth season was always taking place in front of the building. [link]
