Homegrown Steakhouses of Los Angeles

home-grown-steak-houses-los-angeles.jpgEverybody thinks that the denizens of Los Angeles are on a constant diet. At times it may seem that we subsist on nothing but tofu and soy milk. There is a flip side to this, however. We love our burgers, and we also love our steaks. Any list that talks about the top steaks is sure to include places like Ruth's Chris, Arnie Morton's, Lowry's, The Palm, etc., so I'm going to limit my selection to places that are more distinctly LA. Make sure to leave a comment or tip if I've left any of your favorites off the list.

Mastro's

246 N Canon Dr
Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Mastro's is another of the many steak houses that have tried to redefine the genre within Los Angeles in the last ten years. Although it can be a good place for a night out, it is more the type of place where a lonely girl in search of somebody to pay for her rent to meets a lonely guy looking to try out his new Bosley Institute--approved hairstyle on the unsuspecting masses. The steaks are some of the finest meat in town, but everything else seems to rely on a sea of butter, oil or cheese to add any flavor. It doesn't necessarily take away from your enjoyment of the meal, but I suspect a lot of the people who rave about this place just don't want to believe they spent all that new money for nothing. The Lodge

14 N La Cienega Blvd
Beverly Hills, CA 90211

Located at the southern portion of restaurant row, The Lodge is another steak house with a dark interior and lots of leather, and it's creating a scene here in LA. The food is good, but the restaurant feels like it was designed by committee -- which it was. A few others were responsible for the menu, which really works. That left a few people to talk about the wine selection, which is excellent. I just can't shake the feeling that this place is less than the sum of its parts; put together more for people looking to be seen rather than people looking to eat. [link]

Cut

9500 Wilshire Blvd
Beverly Hills, CA 90212

When Wolfgang Puck finally decided to put together a proper steakhouse, you knew that he wasn't going to let anything be second place. Your out of town friends desperate for a celebrity encounter will always enjoy it here. The Richard Meier--designed interior is worth writing home about, but it is the food that really deserves the accolades. Most people will talk about the various styles of Japanese beef, which run up to $160 for an 8 oz. rib eye. The Illinois and Nebraska cuts (i.e., the ones the rest of us can afford) would put most other places to shame, and if you are having enough wine, you'll barely know the difference. Or at least that's what you can tell your date. [link]
