Reubens: A Beloved Irish-ish Heart Attack

reubenshot.jpgCorned beef and cabbage may not set your mouth a-watering, but a toasty, Swiss-cheesey, gooey, salty, sweet Reuben Sandwich just might just do the trick. Corned beef and sauerkraut (instead of cabbage) get layered with slices of Swiss, and topped off with tangy Russian dressing, all slammed between two crisp slices of bread. It's not at all Irish, but has got the flair of the country all sussed out. In honor of St. Patrick's Day, and its ever-popular parade, we've got listings for the beloved Reuben Sandwich all along the bagpiped parade route. Follow the kilts and then step into a spot for a pint and a Reuben - 'cause even though everyone's Irish on St. Patrick's day, not everyone can stomach straight-up Irish fare, especially when hopped-up on green ale.

Patrick Conway's

Patrick Conway's

This pub is definitely one of the most purty in all of Manhattan, as well as one of the largest. It's a fine spot to take in the St. Patrick's Day festivities with class and refinement, and oh yesss, lots of Guinness. Seat yourself at the long bar, under the colorful stained glass, and order up the Reuben: closed faced and crispy. Also highly recommended: the Black Jack Burger — a heaping job of a burger filled with chopped red onion and Worcestershire sauce, covered with Jack cheese and a spicy Cajun mayo. [link]

Green Kitchen

Green Kitchen

It's really a disservice to call this diner merely a diner: great guilty-pleasure food, cheap prices, and round-the-clock service are the reasons why the Green Kitchen has been packing in Upper East Side customers since 1931. The Reuben here comes open-faced and in huge portions; it's nearly impossible to finish without changing into your eating clothes, but to get a smaller taste of the Reubeny goodness, try the "Green Kitchen Panini," with sauerkraut and Thousand Island rather than the usual lettuce and Dijon. It just may change your life. [link]

Big Daddy's Diner

Big Daddy's Diner

The new uptown location of this fun diner sparkles like a big ole kitschy mirage in the sometimes dreary Upper East Side; heavy on the theme, the menu is littered with references that John Waters would wet himself over, but one particularly worth salivating over is the Reuben "Reuben Kincaid, Remember this guy?" Sandwich. Perhaps Reuben Kincaid, (the Partridge Family's manager/played by Dave Madden) doesn't get remembered as much as he'd hope, but this sandwich will probably remind you of its presence with every full-stomached breath you take. And, if you're feeling extra kooky, the sandwich can be accompanied by a side of tater tots — now where else are you gonna get that with your Reuben on St. Paddy's day? [link]

Sarge's New York Deli

Sarge's New York Deli

Sarge's is much loved by its loyal neighborhood crowd, and has often been proclaimed as having the best corned beef in New York City, which is quite the statement. The Reubens here are delish and gooey-good with globs of Russian dressing melting into the layers of beef; the portions are not ridiculous, but just perfect for the cheap fare. [link]

Rosie O'Grady's

Rosie O'Grady's

I dare you to say the name of this pub without breaking out the ridiculous "hearts, moons, and clovers" accent — you just can't do it. Speaking of unavoidable circumstances, I dare you to step into this lovely little saloon without ordering a pint of ale and a heaping Reuben. It is just as classic and traditional as you could desire. [link]

Agh, I know . . . but vegetarians have to eat on St. Patrick's Day too. Obviously a tempeh (fermentated soy beans) Reuben is going to be as traditional as a an Irishman drinking Fosters, but it's still remarkably tastey and really interesting. The tempeh is marinated and treated to the same glitz as a regular Reuben: russian dressing and sauerkraut. But it also offers the vegan in us all a choice of soy cheese on top. It's really not the same, but it's worth a try if you're feeling strangely health-conscious on a day that's all about beer and beef. [link]
