Beer Pong Bars of New York

Monday, March 24, 2008

mainpicbeerpongpost.jpgWith a strong college-kid presence and perhaps an even stronger, refuse-to-grow-up-and-act-older-than-20 constituency, it should come as no surprise that New York decks out a slew of its bars with beer pong tables. First off, there is some debate about the nomenclature: beer pong is also referred to as "beirut", the former being a similar game utilizing paddles, but since the authority of all things collegiate, CollegeHumor, says that 77% of those surveyed call the game "beer pong," I will follow suit here. Note: half of the following bars have the same owner, but most bars listed are essentially identical in decor, clientele, and cost. That is, nothing fancy, full of frat boys, and cheap. Then again, people who get off on throwing an overly-used ping pong ball into a cup of shitty beer probably care little about ambiance. Suggestions welcome! (photo)

Wicked Willy's

149 Bleecker St
New York, NY 10012

Beer Pong and Flip Cup competitions happen every Monday at this Bleecker St. dive, and if you're wanting to relive your college days, this is yet another place to do so. There are karaoke and Jell-o shots! Oh dear. (photo) [link]

Time Out

349 Amsterdam Ave
New York, NY 10024

Not to be confused with the magazine's Time Out New York Lounge, Time Out is a dirty, smelly Upper West Side bar where a game of beer pong will test the strength of your immune system. However, Time Out has recently, cleaned up its act: once it was given over 100 violation points by the Department of Health, but now it has only 12. [link]

The Big Easy

1768 2nd Ave
New York, NY 10128

Avoid this skanky bar like the plague! Ok, I guess I'm just too old to have genuine fun here, so if you must patronize it, make use of the impressive five beer pong tables! Take note of their "house rules" as well. (photo) [link]

Off the Wagon

109 MacDougal St
New York, NY 10012

My first beer pong game (ever!) occurred at Off the Wagon, around the ripe old age of 21. I was initially disgusted by the unsanitary aspect of drinking beer after a ball, which has bounced all over the bar, lands inside the cup. Well, I quickly got over that, and came to love Off the Wagon for its amusing frat boy scene and slight dinginess. [link]

Down the Hatch

179 W 4th St
New York, NY 10014

To some people, the West Village means stylish restaurant settings and intimate wine bars, but fortunately, there are still some divier venues left. A night at Down the Hatch will probably include wings, cheap beer, foosball, cheap beer spilled onto your clothes, beer pong, the "Wheel of Alcohol", and more cheap beer, of course. [link]

Cherry Tree Bar

65 4th Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11217

Even though it's on Park Slope's ugly 4th Ave., Cherry Tree is probably the spiffiest bar with beer pong in the whole city. The clientele is similar to that of other bars on this list, but the atmosphere is different: candles, brick-oven pizza, decent beer options, and a huge backyard. [link]

Boss Tweed's Saloon

115 Essex St
New York, NY 10002

Boss Tweed's calls the game at hand "Beirut" and classes up the joint further with $4 natty light double-cans everyday, all day. I suggest stopping by on Fridays from 5-7 when there are free wings. [link]
