The Best Ramen in the Big Apple

Thursday, April 10, 2008

ramennycmap49.jpgIn many ways ramen is a lot like a hamburger. They're both classic dishes -- one native to Japan (by way of China), the other native to the U.S. (by way of Germany). There are also dozens of variations on each staple. Asking where one can find the "best" version of either is also an ideal way to light a fire under a foodie's ass. Just like burgers, ramen is serious business. Hell, there are even ramen enthusiasts who have anointed themselves Rameniacs. So, without further ado, where to find the best ramen-filled donburi in NYC. As always, feel free to figuratively throw stones and leave your take on the city's best via a comment. (photo)

Menchanko Tei

131 E 45th St
New York, NY 10017

Expect inexpensive, authentic ramen at this midtown east spot. Manchenko Tei offers both Menchanko soup (made with ramen noodles) and traditional ramen dishes, including the pork-broth-based hakata ramen. Menchanko Tei's open late. [link]

Sapporo

152 W 49th St
New York, NY 10019

In the center of the theatre district is Sapporo, serving one of the best ramen in the city. Of the many available here, one standout is the namesake special ramen, which comes with an assortment of meat and vegetables. During the summer, come for Hiyashi Chuk -- a cold noodle version with ham and corn. (photo) [link]

Minca Ramen Factory

536 E 5th St
New York, NY 10009

Minca is an authentic noodle house specializing in ramen. It's no-frills, with a long wooden bar and exposed brick walls. The 11 ramen dishes here include everything from a vegetarian-friendly version to the pork-heavy, delicious Charshu Ramen. (photo) [link]

Setagaya

141 1st Ave
New York, NY 10003

This East Village ramen house is the first US branch of a Japanese mini-chain. Setagaya's specialty is shio ramen ("salt" broth) -- some think it's the best in the city. Get here on the earlier side, as they don't take reservations and lines build up. (photo) [link]

Rai Rai Ken

214 E 10th St
New York, NY 10003

This 14-seat ramen bar may look unassuming both within and out, but the dishes being cooked inside are anything but dull. Choose from three different types of ramen: shoyu, shio and miso. The ramen broth here does tend to be on the salty side. One bonus: the restaurant delivers until 11p.m. and stays open until 3a.m. (photo) [link]

Ippudo

65 4th Ave
New York, NY 10003

This Japanese ramen chain is the brainchild of Shigemi Kawahara, aka the "Ramen King." We took a peek when it opened its first stateside outpost two weeks ago and loved the sizeable, sleek space. Choose between five types of ramen (the red version is my favorite) and a handful of specialty sake cocktails to wash it all down. [link]
