Last year we brought you free bar food in NYC. But as tax day approaches and the economy remains generally shitty, I figured the time was right to also embrace the more upscale snacks that are a staple of New York's fancier bars. It only makes sense that you should get a little somethin' somethin' to complement your $14 martini. After the jump, the most delicious snacks that come for free (as long as you don't count that overpriced cocktail). (photo)
Temple Bar
332 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10012
Flavored with raspberry and carrot shavings, the free popcorn served at this windowless, Asian-themed bar is wonderful. So are the countless varieties of vodka behind the bar. Win-win, folks. (photo)… [link]

Blaue Gans
139 Duane Street, New York, NY 10013
Free almonds and hard pretzels abound at this German/Austrian restaurant in Tribeca. Grab a seat at the bar or one of the red leather boots and munch on some free food before washing it down with a nice German wheat… beer. (photo) [link]

Peasant Wine Bar
194 Elizabeth Street #A, New York, NY 10012
The downstairs sister space to the Nolita rustic Italian restaurant serves some standout free snacks. Look for cheese-flavored crostini (thin, crunchy breadsticks) and fresh green olives at both the bar and on the… various wooden "picnic tables" around the small, candle-lit room. (photo) [link]

Pastis
9 9th Avenue, New York, NY 10014
Keith McNally's perennially packed French bistro, Pastis, doesn't skimp on the fancy bar snacks. This Meatpacking district spot keeps those seated at its long wooden bar happy with hard-boiled eggs and olives, on… the house. (photo) [link]

Bemelman's Bar
35 E. 76th Street, New York, NY 10021
Famous for making one of the best martinis in town, this Upper East Side spot also has some of the best free snacks in town. Grab at seat at one of the leather booths, order a high-priced cocktail, and munch on… an endless supply of spiced nuts, fancy cheese crackers. and potato chips. [link]

Alchemy
56 5th Avenue, Brooklyn NY 11217
I've only been to this restaurant once, about two years ago. But the taste of the fried chickpeas served at the bar feels as vivid as if I was there yesterday. Utterly delicious, and addictive, this little snack… is worth a trip to the Slope. Oh yeah, and the dishes you actually have to pay for aren't bad either. (photo) [link]

Gaby
Sofitel Hotel, 45 W. 44th Street, New York, NY 10036
The brasserie and piano bar at this French hotel chain's midtown outpost is worth a visit for a number of reasons, one of which are the free cheesy bread crispy things (yes, that is their official name). Just remember… to dress to impress, as the dress code here is "smart casual." (photo) [link]

i guess there aren't any free fancy snacks in nyc, since there aren't any listed here.
Bethies, A reasonable conclusion, but luckily one that's false. Look for this once as soon as we can bend the map gods to our will.
A noble idea--will you be doing it for other cities in the near future?
looking forward to some nice, free snacks thanks to the good people at gridskipper
