Los Angeles: Get Drunk In Culver City

Thursday, April 17, 2008

getting-drunk-culver-city-los-angeles.jpgAlthough not always apparent to the Los Angeles newcomer, there are plenty of nightlife options available around town in places other than Hollywood or West Hollywood. East you'll find downtown, west gets you to Santa Monica, and North gets you to the Valley. But what about South? You may think the only real reasons to head in that directions is an airport run or road trip to San Diego, and you'd be correct. However, if you do find yourself on the wrong side of the 10 in search of some nightlife, you will find some pretty good options in Culver City. I've come up with a list to get you started, but add your own notables in the comments.

vinum populi

We've mentioned our love of this wine bar before, and it still holds true. It's a great destination if you love wine, and you can sample as many as you want from their self-serve stations, or step up to a bottle when you've found one that works for you. The food is great, but if you're looking for a more substantial meal, grab a bottle and take it to one of the many restaurants on the block. [link]

saints and sinners

Despite being a dive bar and usually full of locals, I always get a vibe that this place is more Hollywood than the others in the area. The decor stays true to its heaven-and-hell theme, right down to the indoor fire pit. Their specialty drinks are good, but you order them mainly to watch the bartenders breathe fire. It's almost always hot here, which would be good if it could be used to sterilize the place, but instead leaves the place packed and sweaty most nights. At least that gives you a good excuse to hit the bar. [link]

Roger's Exciting Tattle Tale Room

5401 Sepulveda Blvd
Culver City, CA 90230

It's a little embarrassing to find yourself out on the town in Culver City when you know the folks just a few miles north would have a much better appreciation for your Axe body spray, so you might as well go for full-throttle embarrassment and do karaoke. It's a dive bar, so the dark lights, incoherent middle-aged regulars, and ratty pool tables are expected. And as long as you order beers or shots, the bartender is amazing. All of that plus six nights a week of karaoke? Sign me up! (photo) [link]

carbon

9300 Venice Blvd
Culver City, CA 90232

Carbon is sort of a dance club: unlike most of the other bars in Culver City, they actually have no rules against dancing. No cover means an eclectic mix of people, and cheap drinks mean they stay until the place closes. The DJ is usually guaranteed to play a bunch of music for white kids about a year behind the industry curve, but at least they don't charge you anything to walk in the door. [link]
