DC: The Best Tuna Tartare in Town

DCs_Best_Restaurants_for_Tuna_Tartare.jpgIt's bizarre. Washington, D.C., is not on the coast, doesn't have an abundance of top-tier seafood restaurants, and the Asians have been shunted to the suburbs. But a lot of DC restaurants serve excellent tuna tartare, the most delicious pink, moist, fishy-smelling appetizer that doesn't leave you picking hair out of your teeth afterwards. (photo)

BLT Steak

BLT Steak

While the name sounds more appropriate for a gimmicky sandwich stop, BLT Steak's tuna tartare ($16), served with avocado and soy-lime dressing, is one of the best in the city. As with most steakhouses, the portions are substantial, but so is the bill. [link]

Zola

800 F St. NW, Washington, DC 20004

Zola

Zola gets props for having the best martini in DC. Its tartare (served with spicy lime vinaigrette, cucumber salad, whipped cream and giant taro chips for $12) is the perfect accompaniment. Like high-end chips and dip, the taro chips serve as excellent tartare vessels. Zola's habit of giving a black napkin to patrons wearing black pants is a bit gimmicky, but the restaurant has a good wine list and top-notch takes on traditional American dishes. [link]

DC Coast

DC Coast

No surprise, DC's best seafood restaurant has a delicious tartare: 'Poisson Cru' Tahitian Style Tuna Tartare with fresh lime juice, coconut milk, and a wonton crisp for $14. (DC Coast's menu also wins the prize for the tartare with the longest name and description.) (photo) [link]

Charlie Palmer Steak House

Yeah, I'm also surprised Charlie Palmer's made this list. But another Gridskipper contributor raved about its tuna tartare, and it turns out she was right. Charlie Palmer's hand-cut yellow fin tuna tartare with avocado, soy and lime emulsion, and sesame flat bread costs $18. But you've got to get there early; it's only available at lunch. [link]

Peacock Cafe

3251 Prospect St. NW, Washington, DC 20001

Peacock Cafe

At $9.95, Peacock Cafe's tuna tartare atop marinated cucumbers and seaweed salad with wasabi dressing is the cheapest one on this list. But the low price does not denote poor quality — its tartare is delicous. The Peacock Cafe is in Georgetown, however, so expect some airs. [link]

Kinkead's Restaurant

2000 Pennsylvania Ave. NW Washington, DC 20006

Kinkead's Restaurant

Kinkead's serves up a excellent tartare (with guacamole, pupusa, crema and tomatillo salsa for $16), but for the price and pretense, it should be excellent. It'd be best if Kinkead's delivered so you could enjoy the tartare without having to deal with the staff. Hey snooty hostess: your job doesn't require any more skill than seating people at Denny's. Hell, it's probably easier: you don't have to break up fights. [link]

PS 7's Restaurant

777 I St. NW, Washington, DC. 20001

PS 7's Restaurant

PS 7's tuna tartare is served differently than the other restaurants here: it comes as sliders on house-made mini sesame parker house rolls with white miso aioli and cucumber cilantro salad ($11.50). These spicy sandwiches are a consistent hit on PS 7's menu. [link]

Perry's

1811 Columbia Rd. NW, Washington, DC 20009

Perry's

While Perry's is most famous for its brunch on Sunday mornings, which is paired with a drag queen show, its tuna tartare makes it a worthwhile dinner stop too. The tartare ($10) includes orange oil, spicy ponzu, and chives. [link]
