The Best Chinese Delivery in LA

Thursday, October 4, 2007

chinesedeliverylosangeles.jpgIt's hard to find good Chinese food in Los Angeles, and even harder to find places that will bring a quality mu shu fix right to your door. We're blessed with some of the most authentic Thai and Japanese restaurants in the country, but sometimes there's nothing more satisfying than a heaping plate of Americanized Chinese food just like Mom used to order. To that end, we've sought out some Chinese restaurants that really deliver. (Get it?) LA's a big city, so if you've got a favorite place that delivers to a part of town we've neglected, let us know in the comments or the tipline.

1

Wok Master

7170 Beverly Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90036

Wok Master delivers heaping portions of food at incredibly low prices; there's usually a line of people outside waiting to pick up takeout as a testament to its greatness. Loyalists like the wonton soup, which purportedly cures the common cold, and the greasy, delicious pot stickers. Very rapid delivery in the mid-city area. [link]

Wokcano

8408 W 3rd St
Los Angeles, CA 90048

Wokcano has four branches -- downtown, West Hollywood, Pasadena, and Burbank -- offering delivery until 2 a.m. The menu is a pan-Asian mashup of Chinese-American, Japanese, and Thai cuisine, with everything from noodle dishes to sushi to standard beef with broccoli. The Chinese selections are colorful and healthy-tasting (the next best thing to actually being healthy), and every meal comes with a white chocolate-dipped fortune cookie. [link]

Soybean Chinese Restaurant

11966 Wilshire Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90025

Westsiders like Soybean for its fast delivery and delicious versions of comfort food classics like pot stickers and orange chicken. The wise avoid more complicated, expensive entrees, like Peking duck, which aren't worth the extra money. An ordinary entrée costs around $9 and usually comes smothered in heavy sauce; there are also a dozen or so healthy selections for the yoga & Pinkberry crowd. [link]

Le Mandarette

1651 N La Brea Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90028

Not to be confused with swanky Beverly eatery Mandarette, Le Mandarette is a Hollywood hole-in-the-wall featuring the usual Chinese-American fare at low prices. Main dishes usually cost around $8 and are made with unusually high quality meat, and appetizers are cheap enough to order an array if you're the type who can never decide between fried wontons and pot stickers. Free, very fast delivery. [link]

Hu's Szechwan

10450 National Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90034

Hu's is a Palms favorite, featuring flavorful and spicy sauces (the Kung Pao is particularly delicious) ladled generously over the usual meats and vegetables, which are prepared fresh every day and taste that way. Hu's is also inexpensive, with main dishes ranging from $8 to $14 for seafood, and will deliver as far west as parts of Santa Monica, though the delivery time becomes longer and longer the further you get from their home base. Hong Kong Bistro

1643 N Cahuenga Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90028

I like Hong Kong Bistro for its appetizers, which are of a much higher quality than those served by any of its competitors in the area (cough cough Kung Pao Kitty). The crab wontons are particularly brilliant -- they seem to be stuffed with actual crab instead of the usual lukewarm cream cheese sludge. Hong Kong's sushi is also surprisingly passable, and delivery is quick, with only a $10 minimum. [link]

7

Genghis Cohen

740 N Fairfax Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90046

Genghis Cohen itself is a restaurant/bar/live music venue, but the delectable Szechwan dishes that keep patrons coming back, like low-fat No Name Duck and New York-style egg rolls, are also available for delivery. The prices are a little high -- around $8 for appetizers and $12 for main dishes -- but the food is creative and well prepared, and servings are big enough to leave plenty for the next day. [link]

Fortune West Café

418 N Fairfax Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90036

Fortune West is a Chinese/Japanese restaurant serving up classics like Mongolian beef and orange chicken along with flavorful, large portions of wonton soup. But the best part about Fortune West is its prices, which are far more reasonable than those of most of its peers. Delivery is free and quick. [link]
