Suburban Girl's Guide to Shopping in the District

Friday, October 19, 2007

mainbar2.jpgYou know how it goes. You wake up on Saturday morning full of momentum, ready to shop until your wallet is empty. Today, you're feeling particularly adventurous, ready to try on something in color or style you've never worn before -- and maybe even buy it. But then you realize you're in Shirlington, miles away from the hip boutiques of Washington DC, and your brain starts coming up with excuses: "It'll be such a hassle to get into the city," "There's no parking," and "I don't know where the good store are." The next thing you know, you're wandering the halls of Pentagon City Mall, lost in a sea of Banana Republics and Aldos. Lame. While we can't build a new Metro line or create extra parking, we can provide a foolproof shopping guide with a guarantee you'll find something hip, something original, something you would never find at Ann Taylor. If you want to make a night of it, head over the Rock N' Roll Hotel on Saturday, October 20 for Stylistics, a showcase of DC designers, and stay for the dance party.

And Beige

1781 Florida Ave NW
Washington, DC 20009

Figuratively speaking, And Beige is anything but beige. Sure, that may be the dominant color in this new Adams Morgan home décor spot, but the pale wash is offset by an organic mix zebra print chairs, framed butterflies, and cowrie shell salt and pepper shakers. [link]

Carbon

2643 Connecticut Ave NW
Washington, DC 20008

Treat yourself to some new kicks by Biviel or some boots created especially for Carbon by Tentazione of Morrovalle, Italy. With an extensive men's line, you can pick up a pair for him as well. Or not. [link]

Muleh

1831 14th St NW
Washington, DC 20009

More an art space than a store, Muleh turns shopping into a truly elegant experience. Most of the clothes on display are high-end designs; a big purchase here goes a long way. So if you're looking for just the thing to class up your work and play wardrobe, this is the place. On hand are sweaters by Autumn Cashmere and structured wool dresses by 3.1 Pillip Lim. Nana

1528 U St NW
Washington, DC 20009

One of the first boutiques to spice up DC's plain-jane fashion scene, Nana has evolved from a basement vintage store to a bastion of hard-to-find pieces perfect for a weekend in the city. Lately, designs by Canadian clothiers Dagg and Stacy and Preloved have graced Nana's racks. [link]

Wild Women Wear Red

1512 U St NW
Washington, DC 20009

There is no other shoe store that can make a woman feel as sexy as this red-washed boutique on U Street. Show off a pedi with a pair of open toed pumps by Marcello Toshi or rock the tweedy British trend with a pair of high-heeled Oxfords. [link]

Redeem

1734 14th St NW
Washington, DC 20009

"Elegance mixed with grit -- a touch of royalty and twinge of rock star swagger." That's Redeem owner Lori Parkerson's vision for her store, which has a decidedly urban ambiance compared to what we buttoned-up Washingtonians are used to. But her one year old boutique has been wildly successful; the young and hip can be seen cruising 14th Street and the H Street corridor wearing denim by Earnest Sewn , tops by Gentle Fawn, and Peruvian wool scarves crafted by local designer De*Nada Design. Washington, DC 20001

Cocktails, ladies. That's what owner Theresa Watts serves up while you peruse denim by Salt Works and dresses by Tricia Fix. [link]

Pink November

1231 U St NW
Washington, DC 20009

Two branches -- one on Wisconsin Avenue in Georgetown -- could almost make this boutique a chain. But one look at the dresses, tops, and purses sold at Pink November, and you'll realize it's anything but. The vibe in both stores is unabashedly flamboyant yet completely feminine; one of our favorite dresses is an unlikely mish-mosh of pink and purple kimono-like silks trimmed with bold royal blues. Indeed, femininity is exactly what owner Shelly McNair had in mind when she opened her stores: pink, she says, represents birth and rebirth of the female aura. [link]

RCKNDY

1515 U St NW
Washington, DC 20009

David Dennis named this new home décor store RCKNDY -- pronounced "rock candy" - to reflect its style: old-fashioned but with a modern flair. Spruce up your dinner table with some delicate tableware by Mud Australia, and give your bed a modern flair with some new sheets from PlushLiving. "Sweet Décor" indeed. [link]

Green and Blue

1350 Connecticut Ave NW
Washington, DC 20036

In part, this tiny boutique was opened to showcase owner Daniela Cermanova's designer line, Ela Ela. But you'll also find shimmering tunics by Rebecca Taylor and perfect party dresses by Cynthia Steffe . [link]

Secondi

1702 Connecticut Ave NW
Washington, DC 20009

Want a pair of Prada boots, but don't want to break the bank? Check out this high end consignment shop where all clothes, shoes, purses and accessories are "lightly worn." Set aside a good chunk of time for this place on the weekends, however. The tiny second floor space gets packed with fashion crazed women like yourself, and there are only two dressing rooms. [link]
