Taco Wars Part 2: For the Cheapskate Angeleno

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

taco-specials-los-angeles.jpegWe've already covered some of the places you can go for the best Los Angeles tacos, but there are times, like after a half-dozen margaritas, when quantity is better than quality. There are plenty of restaurants out there featuring a "Taco Tuesday" where you can grab a multitude of tacos, sometimes for less than a dollar each. They might not always be the most authentic, but you know the price is right. And even if you can't get outside on a Tuesday, this taco-crazy town will keep you awash in inexpensive Mexican(ish) eats almost every day of the week.

Marix Tex Mex

1108 N Flores St
West Hollywood, CA 90069

This cozy Tex-Mex spot in West Hollywood is known as one of Jennifer Aniston's favorite places to eat, and we can confirm seeing Courtney Cox Arquette there feeding Coco in between angry phone calls to her agent/manager/assistant. But Friends nostalgia is not the only reason to come here. Their Taco Tuesday features an all-you-can-eat carne asada, chicken, carnitas, or vegetarian tacos for $7.95, proving once again that WeHo is the perfect place to go should you have a craving for copious amounts of beef. Don Chuy's

11707 Washington Pl
Los Angeles, CA 90066

People always complain that we never have enough venues West of the 405, so I know nobody will complain when they see I've added Don Chuy's to my list. I've never been here other than Tuesday, and I've never had anything other than the tacos, but do you really need to know more? The tacos are only 99 cents, and are available with chicken, beef, or potato. The major problem here is the lack of a liquor license, meaning you'll have to live without a poor excuse for a margarita, but they do keep it classy with Tecate in a can. (photo) [link]

Don Antonio's

11755 W Pico Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90064

Looking for a place to find a hundred or so UCLA students milling about on a Sunday? Give Don Antonio's a try. You probably recognize it from The Hills, but they are just as well known for their $1 taco Wednesdays. Expect a long wait here all week through, as people flock to soak in the ambiance, margaritas, and coeds. [link]

Barragans

1538 W Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90026

Looking at the Echo Park address of this restaurant, you'd probably think it would be chock-full of annoying hipsters. You would of course be absolutely correct, but that doesn't mean we want to burn it to the ground. This eatery is family-owned, which is enough to pass my authenticity test. More important, there is no better way to start out your work week than the $1 tacos on Mondays, and you'll be able to wash them down with as many sugary margaritas as you can handle. [link]
