Veggie-Friendly Chicago Cuisine

Friday, November 7, 2008

vegetarian%20chicago.jpgThe Windy City is known for deep dish pizza, burgers at the Billy Goat Tavern, and hot dogs covered with mounds of toppings. To put it mildly, Chicago doesn't seem too concerned with healthy cuisine. However, the city's also famous for its recent foie gras ban, and it has as many high-end restaurants, organic-obsessed chefs, and farmers' markets as other big cities. So fortunately, local vegetarians aren't reduced to eating Boca Burgers and Chick Patties; the city has a plethora of chefs that know their way around veggies, plus ethnic restaurants that specialize in the stuff, and we've put together a quick guide for foodie veggies in Chicago. Meatless chili, tofu scramble, and a vegetarian tasting menu, after the jump.

Ethiopian Diamond

6120 N Broadway St
Chicago, IL 60660

One of the tastiest Ethiopian restaurants in Chicago, Ethiopian Diamond serves excellent vegetable dishes. The combo platter is a choice of three of their many veggie options including simmered red lentils, collard greens, split peas, spinach, string beans, and cooked chickpea flour, all on doughy and not-too-sour injera.

Vermilion

10 W Hubbard St
Chicago, IL 60610

This upscale Indian resto has a number of meatless options, but the most interesting is the plantain burger served at lunch. The chef blends boiled plantains with jalapeños, cilantro, lime, ginger, and other seasonings, then deep fries the whole patty. It's pretty incredible.

Charlie Trotters

816 W Armitage Ave
Chicago, IL 60614

Legendary Charlie Trotters has two tasting menus -- the vegetarian and the Grand. Having such a high-end restaurant with a dedicated menu just for veggies is rare, and the chefs do an exemplary job with their meatless dishes. Highlights of the menu include confit of turnips with sultanas, braised white asparagus with brioche, and custard of spring onion with morels, ramps, and grilled garlic shoots.

Chicago Diner

3411 N Halsted St
Chicago, IL 60657

Though we'd choose a plate of well-cooked vegetables over a "meatless meatloaf" any day, the Chicago Diner does imitation meat so well we can't leave it off the list. Almost an institution in the city, the veggie diner has been around since before the mainstream even knew the meaning of organic. We like their super-hot chili with seitan, but they also have great tofu mains.

Kan Zaman

617 N Wells St
Chicago, IL 60610

Kan Zaman is an excellent restaurant for Lebanese. They have a great, filling vegetable platter, and the place is BYOB -- always a plus for the budget conscious.

Russian Tea Time

77 E Adams St
Chicago, IL 60603

The tasty tearoom has a delicious vegetarian tasting menu that's only $40 for two people. It includes an assortment of the best vegetarian choices on their Russian-themed menu. They offer too many options to list here, but standouts are potato dumplings, stuffed mushrooms, beet caviar, stuffed eggplant, vegetable layered stew, chickpea and onion stew, and kasha.
