Vancouver For Cinephiles

Tuesday, December 30, 2008

cinematic%20vancouver.jpgVancouver is an increasingly popular location for filming both major Hollywood features and small indie pieces. It's also an attractive destination for film festivals both touring and local. The city's packed with indie-friendly and second-run theaters, has numerous film schools and acting studios, and sports a number of production studios. In honor of the city's cinematic appeal, we've created a guide to the best theaters and filmish places in Vancouver.

1

Cn Imax Theatre

201-999 Canada Place Vancouver, BC V6C 3C1, Canada (604) 682-2384

We hear Canada actually invented the IMAX format, so it's only right that you see a big nature movie at Vancouver's CN IMAX. They show several movies each day, mostly animal or science related, such as The Dark Knight and The Polar Express. [link]

Empire Theatres Ltd

885 Granville St
Vancouver, BC, Canada

The 20-year-old theater is one of Vancouver's best. Formerly Cineplex Odeon, the megachain Empire took over in 2005. The screens are housed in the shell of a hotel and show new hits like Valkyrie and Yes Man. [link]

3

Hollywood Theatre

3123 W Broadway
Vancouver, BC, Canada

One of the oldest cinemas in Vancouver, the Hollywood has been owned by the same family for over 71 years. The cinema plays both second-run indie and mainstream films, and with prices ranging from $5 to $7, it may be one of the cheapest theaters in the city. They also have comfortable seats and good food. 4

Pacific Cinematheque Pacifique

200-1131 Howe Street Vancouver, BC V6Z 2L7, Canada (604) 688-8202

More of a dedicated art house than other theaters, the Pacific Cinematheque's mission is to "promote critical media literacy and advance cinema as an art form and as a vital means of communication." The Cinematheque hosts educational programs, curates film exhibitions, and has a film library for the public with thousands of books, journals, reference texts, and film scripts. [link]

5

Park Theatre

3440 Cambie St
Vancouver, BC, Canada

The Park Theater is a simple movie house but has modern sound equipment and air conditioning. They only screen one movie at a time, so it's usually a good one. A major highlight here is the theater's "love seats." Arm rests are cushioned on the bottom and can be lifted for better cuddling with your movie partner. [link]

6

Rogers Video

1295 Davie St
Vancouver, BC, Canada

This is a national chain, but it feels like a neighborhood video store. A good alternative to Blockbuster or video on demand, Rogers has an extensive selection and a typically helpful staff. [link]

7

Science World British Columbia

604 Quebec St
Vancouver, BC, Canada

Going to an Omni theater is always cool, unless you're sitting way down in front (when the experience is a bit nauseating). If you get the right seat, seeing a film about space or nature in 180 degrees is a trip. [link]

8

Vancity Theatre

1181 Seymour St
Vancouver, BC, Canada

The VIFC is equipped with stadium seating, high-tech sound systems, and seats imported from France that have double arm rests. The VIFC screens international films and classics. Currently on view among others is The Godfather. [link]

9

Vancouver Film School

200-198 Hastings Street West Vancouver, BC V6B 1H2, Canada (604) 685-5808

This internationally recognized film school is the best educational facility in the city for aspiring filmmakers, makeup artists, animators, and screenwriters. Many graduates have gone on to win Academy Awards for major Hollywood productions or to lead successful independent film careers [link]
