market061509.jpgThough Seattle is known for rain and fog, summer there is glorious. And all that precipitation produces incredible fruits and vegetables on farms dotted all over Washington State. Seattle's summer markets sell truckloads of produce, plus meats, seafood, jams, and crafts from the throughout the region. Just about every weekend, you have over a dozen markets to choose from (plus the odd weekday market as well). After the jump, a few recommendations on the best market targets in the Emerald City.

Ballard Sunday Farmers Market

The Ballard Sunday Market is open year round, though the place really starts hopping in spring and summer. They have everything from fresh produce and farm-raised meats to antiques and homemade jams and sauces. The Ballard neighborhood is one of Seattle's most lively, with a thriving music scene and a number of great restaurants and shops.[link]

Columbia City Farmers Market

Open for almost a decade, the Columbia City Farmer's Market sells fresh seafood, meat, veggies, fruits, honey, and more. The market is only open 3 p.m.-7 p.m. Wednesdays.[link]

Fremont Sunday Flea Market

This weekly Sunday flea market is great for secondhand goods, eccentric pieces, and all kinds of retro, vintage, and antique treasures. The market hosts over 150 vendors and is surrounded by interesting boutiques and cafes.[link]

Lake City Farmers Market

Another weekday market, Lake City is less crowded than the weekend markets but still has all of the great produce and meats. Like many of the other markets in the Seattle, Lake City hosts cooking demos, produce tastings, and live music.[link]

Magnolia Farmers Market

The produce here is sometimes a little pricier than other markets, but it's super-fresh. The flowers are particularly bright and gorgeous, and a few vendors also sell delicious baked goods.[link]

Pike Place Market

The big daddy of Seattle markets, Pike Place is a permanent market open daily. Currently undergoing renovations, which will span the next 2 1/2 years, it features goods from local farmers, numerous sit-down restaurants, bakeries, fresh seafood, meat, groceries, and a whole swath of vendors selling crafts, jewelry, art, and clothing. Several permanent mall-like expansions make the place one of the most popular shopping centers in town.[link]

University District Farmer's Market

This is one of the largest and oldest outdoor markets in Seattle, selling all of the usual fresh produce, cheeses, bread, and handmade gourmet goodies. The market also hosts live music, cooking demos, and gardening booths on Saturdays.[link]

West Seattle Farmer's Market

The West Seattle Farmer's Market features over 35 farmers from across the state selling fruit, veggies, free-range chicken and eggs, and fresh cheeses. Every week, you'll find live music, activities for kids, and cooking demos.[link]
