Grilling Out in New York City

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

mainbbqpic.jpgIf you invariably find yourself an invitee to barbecues (technically just "grillings") in New York and yet never get to wield the tongs, you are not alone. Many of us lack ideal outdoor space to grill (excluding the rickety fire escape where a lonely plant struggles to survive, or a front stoop piled with takeout menus). Well, that's where the "public" factor of many New York parks comes into play. There are many fine spots to hold a barbecue, as well as partake in other recreational activities in beautiful surroundings, in all five boroughs. If you are car-less, planning said barbecue will require some logistical finesse, and the potluck arrangement is still ideal. Here are a few places to grill out once you've got your (headless and marinated) ducks in a row.

Prospect Park

95 Prospect Park West
Brooklyn, NY 11215

Unlike Central Park, this Vaux and Olmstead park permits and even encourages grilling, with seven legal areas for barbecuing (three of which have permanent grills). Walk off your burgers in Brooklyn's only forest, or try your feet at pedal boats on the 60-acre lake.[link]

Flushing Meadows Corona Park

Flushing Bay (between Grand Central Parkway and Van Wyck Parkway), New York, NY 11368 (718) 760-6562

Better known for Shea Stadium and the World's Fair structures, Flushing Meadows also has numerous BBQ pits, minigolf, food vendors, and even a model plane field. On any given weekend, there could be a Colombian, Peruvian, Ecuadorian, Mexican, or Dominican festival with a variety of grub (in the event your delinquent friends arrive empty-handed).[link]

Pelham Bay Park

US-1, New York, NY 10458, USA

Three times the size of Central Park at over 2,700 acres, this Bronx treasure fulfills most park and beach needs. Whether it's the wildlife sanctuary, extensive marshland, or 1800s mansion/museum, you'll be amazed you're still in the Bronx. Within the park is Orchard Beach, equipped with picnic areas, a promenade, stores, and concession stands.[link]

Cloves Lake Park

1321 Victory Blvd
Staten Island, NY 10301

Traveling to the forgotten borough of Staten Island fortunately means that the parks aren't overly crowded and tourists are almost nonexistent. After a 20-minute bus ride from the ferry terminal, you will finally be able to say, "I grilled hot dogs on Staten Island." Bravo.[link]

Moonshine

422 Columbia St
Brooklyn, NY 11231

Haven't been to Red Hook yet? Drifting away from big green spaces and make your way to BYOM at Moonshine! Bring Your Own Meat to cook on one of the provided grills, and condiments are on the house. With four PBRs in a bucket of ice for $5, every hipster heart will be lift'd up.[link]

Morningside Park

W 121st St & Morningside Ave
New York, NY 10026

This rugged cliff of a park was created for economical reasons -- it was too expensive to continue the street grid across the terrain. The designated BBQ area is 121st Street and Morningside Avenue, but you'll see smoking grills elsewhere, particularly on holiday weekends.[link]
