Fort Greene's Mexican Eateries

Friday, November 21, 2008

burritodeluxe.jpg Whether it's chicken, pork or beef with our beans, rice and cheese, Mexican food hardly ever fails to please. It's the ultimate hangover food, among the most satisfying takeout, and the messiest in date cuisine. In sweaty-hot back kitchens throughout the city, some of the best Mexican food to be had in the country is being whipped up en masse. Seriously, so much was never done with a dash of cilantro and lime. For every 'hood in the city, there are a different set of favorite restaurants vying for the hearts and stomachs of the people. Picks for the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill areas of Brooklyn, after the jump.

Castro's

511 Myrtle Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11205

We've sung the praises of this little place that could in the past. A lot has changed in the neighborhood since then. Once the only source of Mexican fare in the neighborhood, Castro's now has a handful of serious competitors. That's fine though, because Castro's is still going strong, most likely thanks to the fact that they're still serving up the cheapest, most ample plates around. For heaven's sake, get the spicy chicken burrito [link]

Habana Outpost

757 Fulton St
Brooklyn, NY 11217
(718) 858-9500

It's difficult to find an upscale Mexican eatery that doesn't play up its Latin/Cuban influences, but Habana Outpost embraces its tropical side to such a thorough degree that it's impossible to call foul. The sister venture of that Nolita favorite Cafe Habana serves up all the best the original restaurant has to offer (Cuban corn, anyone?) and sets it in a sea of bright tropical colors and fun eco-initiatives. Los Pollitos Restaurant

499 Myrtle Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11205
(718) 636-6125

Part of a small-scale chain (there are also two locations in Park Slope), this joint marks, at least in my mind, the beginning of the end for small businesses in the Fort Greene area. They're famous for their chicken, with good reason. Though more expensive than some of the other options, that might be enough to make this the pick for pollo-lovers. And alcoholics, because the margaritas rock. [link]

Bonita

243 Dekalb Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11205
(718) 622-5300

This spot has a built-in following. Maybe it's because the original in Williamsburg is a rave or because of the amazing guacamole, but I think about least half the reason is that this second location includes that most precious of restaurant amenities, a bar. [link]

Pequena

86 S Portland Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11217
(718) 643-0000

This restaurant works its small size to the best of its ability by playing up the quaint factor. The inside is somewhat crowded, but the front yard facing the quiet side street is comfortable. Pequena wins points for choosing lighter, fruitier flavors where most other Mexican taquerias dish out heavier, more cheesy fare. [link]
