Ultimate 3GS iPhone Campout Guide: NYC Fifth Avenue
So you've decided to camp out for tomorrow's release of the new 3GS iPhone at the Apple store on Fifth Avenue and 59th Street in Manhattan. Well that's just fine. There's a big open plaza to hang out in, the weather will probably be decent (unless it's raining), and you'll be surrounded by everything you need to survive in the wilds of the lower Upper East Side. And while you can't quite live off the fat of the land here, local merchants and traders will barter with you for baubles and provisions. Of course, you've chosen one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the country to do so, but there are a few ways to save money on the essentials of life. After all, if you're shelling out a few hundred bucks and then some for this tiny, shiny, precious object, you'll need to save dough in other places. Commit this survival guide to memory, and sally forth to Fifth Avenue.
Apple Store
767 5th Ave
New York, NY 10022
This is the New York flagship Apple Store, and while I saw neither flags nor ships on a recent visit, I can say that it's an impressive-looking place, with a glass cube … as an entrance, a neat spiral staircase, and plenty of space for every gizmo Steve feels will enhance your life. It's also open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so you'll find all kinds of characters checking out the iPods and flirting with the brainy guys and gals at the booze-less Genius Bar. The best part is Apple's benevolence to mankind: free wifi in the store and in the courtyard above, which is basically the front lawn of the General Motors Building, only with fountains and yuppies instead of crabgrass and dandelions.[link]
Carriage House
219 E 59th St
New York, NY 10022
You got your phone. Congratulations. Now it's time to celebrate. Only a couple of bucks left? No worries. Walk down 59th Street to the Carriage House, a completely … respectable New York Irisher, and order up a couple of pints of the old genius. Hell, have a shot of Tullamore Dew as well, you've been through a lot today. Settle in to your booth and start playing with your new toy.[link]
Tao New York
42 E 58th St
New York, NY 10022
Price-wise, Tao is rather dear, but the food is yummers, and the atmosphere is super funky. It's nice and dark even on the sunniest day in this former theater, and a big … Buddha watches over you as you wolf down your roasted Thai Buddha chicken ($21) or 12 oz grilled Kobe ribeye with yuzu cilantro butter ($88 - ouch!). There is a prix-fixe lunch special that's a good deal, with appetizer, main, and dessert. I predict that you'll enjoy the food and experience.[link]
Green Cafe
21 W 58th St
New York, NY 10019
Here's where I try to write something about a deli and sandwich shop that's almost identical to the other deli and sandwich shops I've already covered. Pseudo-fancy … sandwiches. Chopped salads. The ever-present panini (and where the hell were paninis ten years ago, I ask you). Coffee and stuff. A perfectly decent choice, close to the store, and easy on the wallet.[link]
Free Bathroom: Bergdorf Goodman
754 5th Ave
New York, NY 10019
If you've got the dough, by all means try on some couture by Gaultier, or see how you look in Donna Karan's latest. Try out a new hairstyle at the ninth floor hair salon. … Have a meal at the restaurant or a quick bite at the cafe. Otherwise, just use the facilities and quietly slink back to your place in line at the Apple store.[link]
Free Bathrooom: Central Park
The Arsenal, East 64th Street and 6th Avenue
One of the reasons New York is a great city is that we'll allow a huge, beautiful greenspace to exist surrounded by some of the most expensive real estate on the …
planet. Developers would ram apartment towers right through the center of it in a second if we let 'em, but no dice. Central Park is Manhattan's one functioning lung, we can't let it go. To get to the Arsenal, follow the smell of the animals at the Zoo. Don't pee in the bushes, use the facilities.[link]
Marche Madison
36 E 58th St # 1 New York, NY 10022 (212) 355-3366
Upscale deli food galore, and a fine choice for the iPhone stalker. The most expensive sandwich is eight bucks, and that's the fancy prosciutto di Parma. For real …
food, they've got everything from beef tenderloin (price on request) to poached salmon ($20) to a half chicken ($7) to an order of mild chicken wings (price also on request, for some reason). It's the fuel you need for more waiting in line.[link]
Serafina Osteria
38 E 58th St
New York, NY 10022
This is a true osteria, with wine by the glass and pasta dishes in the $15 area. Nothing particularly special about the joint, but it's a tidy, attractive, …
reasonably priced, sit-down restaurant in an otherwise expensive area, and after enough Chianti, will you really care that you're not in Babbo? Try the spaghetti.[link]
Free Bathroom: Crate & Barrel
650 Madison Ave
New York, NY 10022
The most convenient free restrooms in the area are located on the second floor of this housewares emporium, so hop on the escalators and shuffle over to the Madison … Avenue side of the store. On your way out, buy some oversized wine glasses or maybe a 24-cup cupcake carrier. I hear cupcakes are all the rage this season.[link]
All About Food
16 E 58th St
New York, NY 10022
This is a pretty basic Midtown-style cheap lunch spot, with sandwiches, paninis, and chopped/tossed salads with any kind of mix-in and dressing. But I especially like the … small cardboard sign on the counter reminding everyone "We Have Beer." Hooray, beer! There are cans of Heineken, Corona, and Budweiser in the cooler for your drinking pleasure. They also serve breakfast, but beer's better.[link]
Antica Bottega Del Vino
223 E 59th St
New York, NY 10022
This is a fancy-looking place just north of the Apple cube, so if you're being parsimonious, get a $9 insalata mista and a San Pelligrino and you'll be good. Oh, …
you're flush with cash? Then let's split the $88 Chateaubriand al Rosso di Montalcino and a nice bottle of red. We're celebrating a new phone, remember?[link]
Free Bathroom: Bloomingdale's
1000 3rd Ave
New York, NY 10022
Now that Gimbel's is gone, Bloomingdale's is really Macy's last surviving rival in the huge midpriced, old timey Manhattan department store world. Sure, you've got your … Saks and your Lord & Taylor, but Bloomies and Macy's are both kind of democratic equalizers, where normal working stiffs can actually afford a decent outfit and rub elbows with high and low New York while doing it. But what am I talking about, you're hear for the loo. There are several, take your pick.[link]
Free Wifi: Bryant Park
A healthy jog down Fifth Avenue from the Apple Store to 42nd Street brings you to Bryant Park, right behind the gorgeous New York Public Library. It's a great green … retreat from the iPhone madness, and the whole park is saturated with free wifi.[link]
All set here? Continue enjoying Gridskipper...
