San Francisco Spas

san%20francisco%20spas%20miscellaneous%20pampering.jpgGiven the fact that winter weather will take a toll on both your skin and your psyche, it's important to keep yourself toned up, moisturized, and pampered for all the holiday/Inauguration/beat-the-winter-blues parties you've planned. Here are a few good places for making sure you're as cute as possible, despite it being cold as hell outdoors. San Francisco knows what she's talking about when it comes to hedonism, therefore we are blessed with a huge variety of spas, massages, and various other kinds of indulgences (my mother always says "It's not indulgence darling, it's simple maintenance). Some places are Within Expectations, some are Just Right, and some are Too Much, which is, of course, about perfect.

Tru Spa

750 Kearny St
San Francisco, CA 94108

Three words: the Rainforest Room. Oh wow. Start with a refreshing mud pack for the whole body, then add gallons and gallons and gallons of warm water pouring all over in every way imaginable -- a soothing tropical rain, a waterfall in the jungle, a shower massage from head to toe. Yum. TruSpa has a full line of home care products that your therapist will recommend depending on your treatment and skin needs. [link]

Imperial Spa

1875 Geary Blvd
San Francisco, CA 94115

Similar to Kabuki in the full service bath house sense, Imperial does not so much pamper as beat dead skin and discomfort into squeaking, whimpering submission. Imperial has clean, comfy bathing facilities with complimentary lotions and hair care that remind many of the real deal in Korea. They offer the standard array of services like facials, scrubs, massage, etc., but unlike Kabuki, everyone gets a fluffy robe and you can giggle and gossip without being gonged. There's no common area, and the actual massage and scrub combo in the communal area may weird out the uninitiated. But the sighs of relief and the baby-ass softness you will emerge with makes being naked in a public room having your funbags pummeled by a woman in her underwear a mere blip in the whole experience. Seriously, they're that good. [link]

Tasha Berg - Nurturopathy

San Francisco, CA 94117, USA

Tasha Berg got the SF Bay Guardian's audience vote for Best Massage Therapist in the Bay three years in a row. This is not an exaggeration. An hour and a half under Tasha's expert care will leave you loose as a noodle and free of knots and kinks. She offers hot stone massages, aromatherapeutic tinctures in her massage oils, and specializes in pain relief and deep tissue therapy. She is more than worth the trip out to the Sunset. [link]

Burke Williams Spa

865 Market St
San Francisco, CA 94103

Verging on the edge of extremely posh, the Burke-Williams Spa offers total sensory delight in the form of a variety of treatment packages. You can have a quick pedicure for the Opera that night, or spend the whole day in splendor with treatments with names like Savannah's Surrender and Emilee's Intrigue. Burke Williams even makes the humble bath a thing of beauty with their own line of bath products and skilled attendants to meet your every need. [link]

Kabuki Springs & Spa

1750 Geary Blvd
San Francisco, CA 94115

A brilliant introduction to the art of the public bath, Kabuki Hot Springs and Spa has approximately a millennium of Japanese bathing tradition behind every detail. Inside the tranquil public bath space, you can lather yourself up with their luscious custom formulated herbal body washes, shampoos, and conditioners, then meander between the hot tub, sauna, lavender-scented steam room, and cold plunge. Tea, lemon water, and cucumber water are available for cell replenishment. Lounge, read a magazine, take a nap, and come out refreshed and relaxed on your own time. Spa treatments such as facials and massages are available as well. [link]
