Shacking Up In Pasadena

Friday, November 7, 2008

pasadenahotelsmain2.jpgPasadena is Los Angeles's genteel, elegant older sister, filled with fabulous old buildings and plenty of shrubbery. It's also surprisingly easy to access from most LA neighborhoods, since it's one of the places in the LA area blessed with a comprehensive metro line. Everyone in Pasadena walks with a spring in their step and oxygen in their lungs, as it looks smog-free and feels like Mayberry -- with an H&M, a Tiffany's, and some cute hotel options besides.

The Westin Pasadena

191 N Los Robles Ave
Pasadena, CA 91101
(626) 792-2727

People dig Old Town Pasadena for the historic landmarks interspersed with delicious high-calorie restaurants. The Westin occupies bar-none the best location for walking to and fro among the sights and back. [link]

Ritz Carlton, Huntington Hotel & Spa

1401 S Oak Knoll Ave
Pasadena, CA 91106
(626) 568-3900

The granddaddy of San Gabriel Valley hotels, and they know it. Guests might encounter just a touch of attitude from the staff, but the grounds and bits of luxury will more than make up for it. There's always a pool party or wine tasting somewhere on the property. [link]

Kingston Inn & Suites

2156 E Colorado Blvd
Pasadena, CA 91107
(626) 793-9339

There's not much special about the hotel itself, though it's perfectly serviceable. The location is where it's at, so to speak. The streetside rooms (apparently all with balconies) are right on the Rose Parade route. The hotel is also right in the green, nature-y goodness of suburban Pasadena. [link]

Bissell House Bed & Breakfast

201 Orange Grove Ave
South Pasadena, CA 91030
(626) 441-3535

Pure stinkin' elegance oozes from every pore of this historic landmark. It's a Victorian mansion -- but don't worry, each room has a bathroom, and they've added a pool. Pure gorgeousness, and if you're there during the Rose Bowl, you've got a first-hand view of the parade staging area. [link]

Artists' Inn

1038 Magnolia St
South Pasadena, CA 91030
(626) 799-5668

This bed and breakfast could not be quainter or kookier. Each room is done in the style of a particular artist or art period (check out the Van Gogh room, it's amazing). The inn does up a tea service every afternoon, and it's actually in an excellent location, with a subway station just a few blocks away. [link]

Saga Motor Hotel

1633 E Colorado Blvd
Pasadena, CA 91106
(626) 795-0431

Get your gin, get your tonic, and have yourself a retro party out on the astroturf. This motel is a holdover from Route 66-era fabulousness, but there are useful updates like wifi in the rooms. Not that you'll have any use for it, what with all the Pimm's Cups and oyster dip to consume. Man, I really want to have a party there. [link]
