LA's Best Bowling Alleys

Monday, December 29, 2008

bowling.jpgIt's good, clean fun, as long as you remember the hand sanitizer. Who cares if it originated in ancient India? Bowling is as American as baseball and the 4th of July. It's the ultimate party sport (beer pong doesn't count), and these nine Los Angeles alleys run the gamut from exclusively high-tech to old-school down and dirty.

1

Shatto 39 Lanes

3255 W 4th St
Los Angeles, CA 90020

The games are cheap, the booze is cheap, and, well -- the general feel here is cheap, but if you're not afraid of a little grunge (this is bowling, after all), the Shatto 39 Lanes on the edge of Koreatown should do the trick. The alley features old-fashioned, above-ground ball returns, and the coffee shop serves up burgers, nachos, and chow mein. A house whiskey will only cost you $3.50, and the Bud backer a mere $3. All Star Lanes

4459 Eagle Rock Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90041

The All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock boasts 22 lanes, automatic scoring, a cocktail lounge with cheap drinks, pool tables, video arcade, and a menu filled with burgers and pizzas. Word on the street is that they have killer karaoke, too. [link]

AMF Midtown Bowling Center

4645 Venice Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90019

The Midtown Lanes, just east of La Brea where Venice and San Vicente meet, is known for 24 well-maintained lanes, cheap bowling, cheap beer, and stellar service. Weekends feature Xtreme bowling, which means a darkened alley and booming music. [link]

4

AMF Bay Shore Lanes

234 Pico Blvd
Santa Monica, CA 90405

Just blocks from the beach, this Santa Monica bowling alley leaves little to be desired with its 24 lanes, well-worn booths, cheap drinks, and late-night glow-in-the-dark bowling on weekends. Wednesday and Sunday nights feature discounted bowling: Only $5 for shoes and unlimited use of a lane, plus discounted drinks. [link]

Pickwick Bowl

921 W Riverside Dr
Burbank, CA 91506

Let's see: 24 synthetic lanes, computerized scoring, a fully equipped pro shop, bar, and video arcade make the Pickwick Bowl an ideal spot for everyone from league bowlers to drunken amateurs. The alley is part of Burbank's Pickwick Gardens complex, which also happens to house an ice rink should the urge to skate strike. [link]

6

Jillian's

1000 Universal Studios Blvd, CA 91608, USA

Super popular and a tad pricey, Jillian's attracts legions of CityWalk tourists. It only houses 10 lanes, but it's a good spot for adults looking to regress in a roomful of video games. Downstairs turns into a 21-and-over nightclub on weekends, and the menu features re-imagined American classics [link]

7

AMF Mar Vista Lanes

12125 Venice Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90066

The Mar Vista Bowl is about as classic as it gets. This seriously outdated alley can feel pretty sketch: Be brave, it adds to the fun. The greasy spoon attached is called Pepy's Galley, and it amplifies the sense that you've stepped (way) back in time. [link]

8

Lucky Strike

6801 Hollywood Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90028

Located at Hollywood and Highland, Lucky Strike features 12 state-of-the-art bowling lanes in a modern lounge setting. The upper dining area features a menu that is both kitschy and gourmet, with choices like "bite size mac and cheese balls." Lucky Strike is 21 and over after 7 p.m., bowling rates and a strict dress code is enforced. [link]

9

Pinz Bowling Center

12655 Ventura Blvd
Studio City, CA 91604

Pinz is one of the premiere bowling alleys in Los Angeles, with 32 lanes, scoring monitors with 3D graphics, a full arcade, billiard tables, full service bar and food, a state-of-the-art sound system, and laser light shows. Four times each week they host the "Rock 'n' Bowl" dance party, and their 10,000 square foot club is available for private events. [link]
