Celeb Spotting In The City of Light

Friday, December 19, 2008

celebparis121808.jpgFrench movie stars tend to walk freely in Paris, their fellow citizens too snobby or indifferent to bother to stop them for autographs. American celebrities usually cause more of a stir, but the international jet-set hangs together at a handful of Parisian hotel bars and watering holes, where you are likely to get a celebrity sighting with your overpriced Champagne.

Hôtel Costes

239 Rue Saint-Honoré
75001 París, France

The boudoiresque Jacques Garcia-designed Hôtel Costes has long been a hangout for international movie stars and the groupies that accompany them. This is where Johnny Depp met Vanessa Paradis and is a favorite of La Lohan, to name a mere happy few. [link]

Hotel Plaza Athénée

Avenue Montaigne
75008 París, France

Don't be surprised to see John Malkovich asking for another Diet Coke at the Hotel Plaza Athénée, a longtime favorite of Hollywood royalty. Superstar chef Alain Ducasse oversees the five-star Parisian palace's restaurants and can also be seen sipping mineral water in the Blue Bar from time to time. The hotel also served as the location for the ultimate episode of Sex and the City, and its Eiffel Tower views from the window were no lie. [link]

Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme

5 Rue de la Paix
75002 París, France

The sleekly modern Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme near Place Vendôme has a generic contemporary tastefulness that makes it a favorite with international travelers. A frequent setting for junket-style French film interviews, it also served as Paris base camp for last year's Eva Longoria-Tony Parker nuptials. Go have a drink in the bar -- but don't expect a waiter to show up for at least a half an hour.

Café Marly

93 Rue de Rivoli
75001 París, France

Located spectacularly under the arches of the Richelieu wing of the Louvre Palace, the Café Marly attracts both tourists and beautiful people. This Costes Brothers creation is big, airy and both sceney and anonymous enough to be a favorite celebrity meeting place. [link]

Café de Flore

172 Boulevard Saint-Germain
75006 París, France

In addition to being a tired hangout for overpaid American expatriates chasing the Hemingway myth, the Café de Flore is also a Left Bank institution for international film royalty. While shooting Marie Antoinette, Sofia Coppola lived two doors down and was on first-name terms with the waiters. Insiders opt for the upstairs, no-smoking room far from the tourists on the sidewalk. Hôtel Montalembert

3 Rue de Montalembert
75007 París, France

An overpriced, sceney boutique hotel with an LA-in-Paris feel, the Hôtel Montalembert's lobby bar also doubles as a hangout for French actors and the hacks who interview them. Keep your eyes out for actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, her actor-director husband Yves Attal, model-actress Laeticia Casta, and ageless actress-singer Arielle Dombasle. [link]

Hôtel Lutetia

45 Boulevard Raspail
75006 París, France

The high-ceilinged bar at the Art Déco and Belle Époque Hôtel Lutetia in Saint-Germain-des-Prés has long been the leading rendez-vous spot for French film star interviews. On a single afternoon, you might see Isabelle Huppert curled up on a red velvet banquette sipping overpriced thé au lait, French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld whizzing by in a short skirt, Catherine Deneuve smoking away in the corner, or French heartthrob Benoît Magimel with his dog, Adora.
