Paris Food & Wine Lit

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

paris-food-and-wine-lit.jpgLearning to cook has become curiously à la mode in Paris in the last few years, with a cookbook publishing boom to prove it. For the foreign visitor, the range of titles shows that French home cooking is not exactly America's Julia Child-fueled vision of onion soup and Boeuf Bourguignon. At the city's bookstores, you can find everything from Escoffier to photo-heavy vehicles from today's French TV chefs, who are increasingly interested in the cuisines and eating habits of the rest of le monde. The following is a selection of gastronomic and wine bookstores for the foodie tourist in search of a souvenir.

1

La Cocotte

5 Rue Paul Bert
75011 Paris, France

At this self-titled "librairie du goût" in the 11th, four young women have opened up a fun bookstore/salon de thé with French, English, and Japanese books and magazines about cooking plus a selection of objects for the kitchen and table. Check out their website for book launch parties and signings.[link]

75004 Paris, France

The B.H.V. department store has something for everyone -- including a large selection of cookbooks. Here you can find everything from reference books to gimmicky trend books on le brunch and les muffins. The B.H.V. also hosts Saturday book signings with popular cookbook authors.[link]

One of France's largest specialty bookstores, Eyrolles in the Latin Quarter has books on a range of subjects. But at its 63 boulevard Saint-Germain address, you can find an excellent selection of professional and reference books on cuisine and wine, along with a knowledgeable staff.[link]

Le Vin se Livre

36 Allée Vivaldi

An unusual wine store that also sells books about wine, Le Vin se Livre is located near Bastille. The selection of native wines is affordable and carefully chosen, and the place hosts Friday night wine and cheese-tasting and special wine and literature-related events.[link]

9 Rue du Bac
75007 Paris, France

An excellent and serious establishment specializing in fine rare books about food and wine, Rémi Flachard will help you find everything from special edition cookbooks to old menus going back to the 15th century. This is an old-world shop for the serious collector, but it's also fun to browse if you have an interest in culinary literature throughout the ages.[link]

Librairie Gourmande

90 Rue Montmartre
75002 Paris, France

The reference for cookbooks in French (and English), the Librairie Gourmande relocated last spring from its longtime Latin Quarter location to the 2nd arrondissement.
