NYC's Football-Friendly Bars

Monday, November 10, 2008

mainfootball2.jpgGrowing up in the so-called Steel City of Pittsburgh, I was practically born and baptized a football fan -- the priest at weekly Mass gives an impassioned "Let's pray for the Steelers," and services are hurried on Football Sunday. When I irreverently moved to Jets and Giants territory, I immediately sought out where I could wave my Terrible Towel and have cheap beer spilled on my shirt by loud, raucous men who will probably try to hit on me because I am a blond chick with a penchant for liquor-infused sports watching. Hence NFL Sunday Ticket and the bars that buy this service for us out-of-towners, or those locals who prefer the big screen and a bloody mary over a six pack and their couch. The where and why after the jump, along with our handy-dandy map to illustrate the stumbling distance from your apartment or nearest subway. More suggestions welcome in the comments or via the tipline.

Gym

167 8th Ave
New York, NY 10011

Of course New York has a gay sports bar, and of course it's in Chelsea. Beer specials are reportedly good, and there are "hot jocks" serving drinks. Something tells me these are not the same hot jocks who looked up cheerleaders' skirts. [link]

ESPN Zone

1472 Broadway
New York, NY 10036

I know, I know, it's like sending someone who asks for a NYC slice to a Pizza Hut, but isn't it nice to know where to go to escape your terrible Broadway show matinee? Like all things Time Square, this place is huge and will probably rip you off, but your game will be showing. [link]

Loki Lounge

304 5th Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11215

Loki Lounge is one of my favorite "sports bars" because it's rarely busy, mixes homemade bloody marys, and has a huge lounge of old couches. It's the living room you wish you had, and if you arrive early enough, the bartender takes your request for which game to project on the big screen (there are other TVs too). Oh yeah, and the Coors Light girls might stop by. [link]

Big Easy

1768 2nd Ave
New York, NY 10128

My days of tequila with a beer chaser and random make-out partners are over, but maybe yours aren't? The Big Easy is your typical sports bar: cheap drinks and drunk frat boys preying on females. Oh, and the bar's email is getdrunk@bigeasynyc.com. Exactly. [link]

Mercury Bar

493 3rd Ave
New York, NY 10016

11 flat screen TV's, chicken wings, and beer specials on the weekend all point to a decent sports bar destination. A tipster recently informed us that a group of Detroit fans will be calling this east side bar home for the football season and beyond. [link]

Ship of Fools

1590 2nd Ave
New York, NY 10028

If you're an out-of-towner like me, you are accustomed to watching your team on a bar TV without sound while the sounds of a Jets and/or Giants game floods your ear canals. Ship of Fools remedies that with 5 different "sound zones" that allow you to actually hear the game. What a concept! [link]

Cattyshack

249 4th Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11215

Chelsea has its gay sports bar while Park Slope wannabe Gowanus has its lesbian version. With NFL Sunday Ticket, an outdoor smoking deck, and a go-go pole, girls will have fun while guys will inevitably receive little attention. (photo) [link]

Blondies UES

1770 2nd Ave
New York, NY 10128

Like the Upper West Side version, the Blondies across Central Park has the same vibe: immense amount of space (two floors), televisions, bar food, and cute waitresses. [link]

Blondies UWS

212 W 79th St
New York, NY 10024

Named after and co-owned by a former Playboy model, Blondies has a stand-out Ohio and Pennsylvania contingency, specifically the Cleveland Browns and a slew of college teams at this Upper West Side locale. We recommend making a reservation on Sunday afternoons. There's another location on the Upper East Side as well. [link]

Standings

43 E 7th St
New York, NY 10003

"Sports bar" and "tiny bar" are usually not synonymous, and this East Village watering hole stays true to its name; there's a good chance you will be standing on game day. It's the official Cincinnati Bengals bar and also attracts a lot of college football fans. Free bagels on Sunday afternoons! (photo) [link]

200 Fifth

200 5th Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11217

Forty beers on tap, a decent Sunday brunch, and a full menu make this often-crowded bar one of my favorites for watching the game. There is a significant Steelers fan presence, but a lot of teams are represented and appropriately cheered. [link]
