Los Angeles' Best Pho
It's been a few years since the pho (rhymes with "duh") craze swept Los Angeles. Trends come and go so quickly around here that this Vietnamese comfort food might not be on the radar for some people. We're here to say that you should put pho back on the top of your list. Pho tastes good, it doesn't cost a lot, and it only gets better the more you drink. Here's a list of some LA pho places to get you started. More pho advice? Reveal your acumen in the comments or via the tipline.
PhoReign
2123 Sawtelle Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90025
Trying to find pho west of the 405 is a difficult proposition. PhoReign is Vietnamese and Japanese fusion, and unfortunately whatever fuse they did to the pho did not … really work. Overall, you get less food than other places for more money. Eating here might only leave you with a larger craving for the real thing, but it'll do in a pinch. (photo) [link]
Blossom
426 S Main St
Los Angeles, CA 90013
Like a lot of other eateries downtown, Blossom is not usually crowded. Again, you shouldn't inconvenience yourself to get here, but when you are downtown, this should … definitely be an option. Tell you friends that "sketchy" means "authentic." [link]
Pho Western
425 S Western Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90020
There will be times in your life when you need a 24-hour pho restaurant. Well, that's a bit much, but just in case you really do need a place to get pho at all hours, Pho Western exists. If you are enjoying the pho here, you are probably bliss-pho-lly drunk. [link]
Absolutely Pho Bulous
350 N La Cienega Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90048
Good pho is worth driving for, so please don't go very far out of your way to get to Absolutely Pho Bulous. It gets the basics right, and it is in Hollywood, but … authenticity is not the name of the game here. We'll give it a few extra points for the original name (a close second is What the Pho), but pho snobs won't touch it. [link]
Golden Deli
815 W Las Tunas Dr
San Gabriel, CA 91776
Golden Deli can be considered the benchmark pho restaurant in town, and people from all over Los Angeles make the pilgrimage to San Gabriel. Not surprisingly, the wait … can be excruciatingly long, but despite its popularity the portions are still large and the prices are still cheap. With all of the chain pho restaurants out there, it's too bad they didn't decide to copy this one. (photo) [link]
Pho So 1
6450 Sepulveda Blvd
Van Nuys, CA 91411
There are plenty of challenges to life in the valley, and lack of pho is another blight on this portion of the city. Located in Van Nuys, Pho So 1 should not be confused … with the inferior Pho 999 across the street. People far more knowledgeable in the ways of pho tell me that this place is authentic, and while the look may frighten you at first, there is a lot here to love. The menu offers every combination of tripe, tendon, and flank that you can imagine. Most of the pho on the menu is less than $5, making Pho So 1 very busy. [link]
Pho Cafe
2841 W Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90026
From the outside, Pho Cafe looks like a typical Silver Lake eatery, but on the inside it serves up helpings of tripe and tendon like any other pho place. Pho Cafe scores … more points for the looks of the seating than the taste of the food, with the broth offering a little less flavor and aroma than expected. (photo) [link]
Pho 2000
215 N Western Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90004
We mention Pho 2000 mainly as a warning for the beginner. Pho 2000 is popular largely because it was one of the first pho places in Koreatown. And while pho is a … Vietnamese dish, Pho 2000 is owned by Koreans, and so many of the die hard pho-natics won't touch the stuff. There are too many other good places to recommend Pho 2000 in general, but it does have one trump card: it's open until 4 a.m. In a town where the late-night dining can be limited, Pho 2000 is a solid way to prevent some of those early morning shakes.
