LA's Best Late-Night Dining

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

24houreatinglamain.jpgAttention workaholics, partyholics, and alcoholics: We know you're in perpetual need of 4 a.m. non-fast-food options around Los Angeles. The list of 24-hour (or at least late-night) eateries spans countless neighborhoods and cuisines. Ergo, consult our smattering of favorites for a wind-down belly filling or an energizing, report's-due-tomorrow panicky meal. The good news is it's not all diner food, though diners do make a strong showing. Korean, Thai, and Mexican all offer good choices for predawn eating, and we encourage drunken multiculturalism. Submit your own culinary bolt-holes in the comments or to the tip jar.

The Kettle

1138 Highland Ave
Manhattan Beach, CA 90266

I won't pretend to know much about Manhattan Beach, but apparently the Kettle is the only after-hours diner for beach city residents in the know. They serve diner food all the way including pancakes and French toast -- some of nature's strongest hangover combatants.[link]

Hodori

1001 S Vermont Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90006

People go on and on about how much they love this place, but at the same time most seem to disdain the food. Though Korean cuisine ranks as one of LA's favorites, people coming here are all about the ambiance, and it seems every drunky in a two-mile radius ends up here.[link]

Sanamluang Café

5176 Hollywood Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90027

Sanamluang is "only" open till 4 a.m., but two hours should be plenty of time to stagger over after the girls at Jumbo's finally throw you out. Plus, the heaping bowls of Thai noodles are cheap enough to make this place affordable after a night of throwing singles on the stage. (With the right girl, Jumbo's and noodles could be the world's greatest date.)[link]

25 Degrees

7000 Hollywood Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90028

I don't know why 25 Degrees took so long to switch to 24 hours. Putting a good restaurant in a very sexy hotel on a strip that's home to some of LA's most well-known clubs turned out to be a brilliant idea, especially since the drunk set won't remember that $14 burgers are kind of ridiculous. Whatever, they taste good![link]

Pacific Dining Car

1310 W 6th St
Los Angeles, CA 90017

Perhaps you want real linens and china plates after a night of Downtown debauchery. This place delivers the fancy factor in spades, plus expensive renditions of classics like meatloaf. I think the restaurant has been in operation for 2 bajillion years, so it's worth going to for history's sake any time of day.[link]

Benito's

6751 Santa Monica Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90038

Yeah, the rolled tacos are pretty popular, but the real reason to go here is the floor show. Welcome to transvestite central, folks. You can eat your taco and watch them fight or decide it's all too real and leave very quickly. Also, I once saw Hobie from Baywatch hanging out here. Not eating, just ... standing around.[link]

Fred 62

1850 N Vermont Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90027

Some people think that the servers at Fred 62 have a terrible attitude, but I say they're just high as kites and trying to hide it. This is one of the few restaurants in LA that will have a line out the door at 3 a.m., but if you time it right and/or don't mind eating at the sidewalk tables, you'll be treating your hangover in no time.[link]

Canter's Deli

419 S Fairfax Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90036

Oh, Canter's -- an oldie but a goodie. You can get a better pastrami sandwich in LA, but not at 4 a.m., and not with the timewarp ambiance. Canter's draws one of the most culturally diverse crowds in the city, all chowing down on huge sammies, tuna melts, matzoh ball soup, excellent chocolate milkshakes, and all manner of cheesecakes while trying not to stare at the inevitable celebrity in the house.[link]

BCD Tofu

3575 Wilshire Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90010

This may be my favorite late night dining option in the whole city. Sit down, point to a number on the menu, and watch in awe as all kinds of crazy things are placed in front of you. Highlights include a sizzling platter of meat and the transcendent (at 3 a.m., anyway) tofu soup, but you'll also get mysterious pickles and a whole salted fish. Newbies beware: Don't open the pot of rice before the waiter has given permission.[link]

Tommy's

2575 Beverly Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90057

I'm clearly in the minority by thinking the whole chiliburger concept is kind of gross. I drive by Tommy's on the way home from late-night shenanigans without a thought, except to note that it's quite crowded for a place that expects you to eat one of the world's messier foods while standing on the corner. Though not open 24 hours, you can still hit up Tommy's after the bars close.[link]
