NYC's Most Delicious Hot Dogs

Tuesday, December 23, 2008

new%20york%20best%20hot%20dogs.jpgIn the city where one corner stand spawned more imitations than Original Ray's, hot dogs are serious business. Good dogs are almost uncountable in New York, and everyone has their favorite. So whether you're a connoisseur or just looking for a cheap meal, check out our picks, then supply righteous omission indignation in the comments or via the tipline.

F&B Gudtfood

269 W 23rd St
New York, NY 10011

The folks at F&B (Frites and Beignets) definitely have their meat and meat substitutes covered when it comes to hot dogs and hot dog-shaped substances. Choose from beef, turkey, chicken, pork, seafood, or veggie, then play mix and match with toppings. No lack of choices in this department either, with options ranging from your typical relish to guacamole and corn salsa. There's another location in Midtown. [link]

Dominick's Hot Dogs

Woodhaven Blvd & 67th Ave
Queens, NY 11374

New York is filled with hot dogs carts, which have neither addresses nor reviews from which to gain publicity, so for a lowly dog truck to gain a following is quite a feat. Dominick's has managed to do just that. Parked on the west side of Woodhaven Boulevard next to St. John's Cemetery in Rego Park, Queens, since 1959, the truck simmers their dogs rather frying or grilling. [link]

Shake Shack

Madison Ave & E 23RD St, United States

For all its hamburger fame, people sometimes forget the renowned Shake Shack got its start as a humble hot dog stand. Back then, they would sell out of Chicago-style dogs before the day was through, and very little has changed. We advise you to have one "dragged through the garden" and then decide for yourself whether the Shack lives up to the hype. [link]

Crif Dogs

113 St Marks Pl
New York, NY 10009

If you head to Crif Dogs for lunch, plan on a salad for dinner; these dogs are a calorie-counter's nightmare. Deep fried in hot oil and served up with a variety of stomach coating toppings like cheese and onions or avocado and bacon, the franks at Crif's will make you think in a whole new way about what you put between your (hot dog) buns. Katz's Deli

205 E Houston St
New York, NY 10002

Katz's Deli is a New York City institution, and for good reason. They proudly brag about having served up over 12,000 hot dogs in their time. After that many, it's no surprise that they've got it down to an art. Join the line inside for one of their slender, all-beef hot dogs which they make on the premises. Sinking your teeth into one of these meaty treats is an experience more than 100 years in the making. [link]

Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs

1310 Surf Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11224

The original Coney Island hot dog stand was opened in 1916, but Nathan's has since expanded into a worldwide franchise. One could say they're most known for gluttonous hot dog eating contests, but they still pack 'em in to sell huge dogs smothered in cheese, chili, and other delights designed to kill. Worth the long subway ride on a sunny day, even if the rest of Coney Island is closed. [link]

Papaya King

179 E 86th St
New York, NY 10028

Papaya King actually predates Gray's Papaya, but Gray's has arguably surpassed the King in popularity. Much the same offerings, including the fruity beverages; many devotees still swear by it and curse the rise of Gray's and the other papaya interlopers. Of course, it doesn't help that this location won national attention when a news crew filmed rats cavorting around the store at night early last year. There's another location in the West Village. Grays Papaya

2090 Broadway
New York, NY 10023

Famous for their great dogs, juices, and recession specials, you can't beat Gray's for a great deal -- one recession special will set you back a mere $4.95, and comes with two dogs and one of their freshly blended juices. Two more locations in the Theater District and West Village. [link]

Old Town Bar & Restaurant

45 E 18th St
New York, NY 10003

A hop-skip-and-a-jump from Union Square is this no frills former speakeasy. It's been around for ages and serves up one delicious dawg. The bun is toasted and buttered, not to mention the hot dog in question is of the grilled natural-casing all-beef Sabrett variety.
