Tuxedo Shopping in San Francisco

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

quick%20tuxedo%20rescue%20san%20francisco.jpgPicture it: Your girlfriend calls, reminding you that her sister's wedding is this weekend and she's sure you've already gotten your tuxedo, but she just thought she would remind you. Of course, the tux hanging in the back of your closet is from junior prom, and you're sure the intervening years of martinis and steak have taken their toll. Relax -- there a lot of good highfalutin' suit options in SF. Scrambling for rental-wear certainly sucks, but these places make it suck less.

Schauplatz

791 Valencia St
San Francisco, CA 94110

Forget the intimidating name; Schauplatz is the hipster's garden of wonders when it comes to finding that perfect outfit for that charity ball / formal wedding / record release party. Here you'll find something a little more interesting, a little less traditional, but marvy from collar to cuff. They tend toward the smallish sizes, and it's the usual vintage luck of the draw, but the staff won't make you feel bad about yourself. Unless you want them to. [link]

Macy's Men's Store

120 Stockton St
San Francisco, CA 94108

Not just a men's store, but a posh, well appointed men's store at that. They don't rent, but they can outfit you in everything down to your tie clip. Attentive service, not too much attitude, and they have it in your size. Makes shopping much, much easier, especially for those who can't stand shopping. [link]

Selix Formalwear

123 Kearny St
San Francisco, CA 94108

The old standby. You're desperate, you need that tux yesterday, and your plane takes off tomorrow morning. Never fear! Put yourself in the capable hands of Nina down at Selix, and she'll make sure everything goes just right. They can run things up in a jiffy, and they will make sure there are no questions about fit and style. Trust them, they do this all the time. [link]

La Rosa

1711 Haight St
San Francisco, CA 94117

The last of the fine vintage clothiers. With vintage, sometimes it's a toss up, but for guys at La Rosa, there's almost guaranteed to be something available for the occasion. The attitude is summed up by the sign on the door: "No photographs, food, drinks, or dirty hippies". [link]

Al's Attire

1314 Grant Ave
San Francisco, CA 94133

Every male we've dragged into this place has experienced nothing but rapture as a result. Al's is a one of a kind atelier and does bang-up alterations. Buy or rent, you'll find something fabulous. The staff aren't snotty, and they actually know what they're talking about. [link]

Tuxedo Shop

109 Geary St
San Francisco, CA 94108

Tuxedo Shop is an out of the way place that's not for the faint of heart. Once you get past the somewhat abrasive owner, however, you have hit the tux jackpot. It's a tiny shop, but fittings are fast and accurate, and the work is top-notch. [link]
