Sydney Late Night Eats
One of the problems with Sydney is the dearth of late night kitchens. After 10ish you tend to find your options limited to dodgy kebabs, crappy pizza, or whatever travesty the Quickie Mart has warming up in the pie heater. As always, we have tracked down the city's hidden gems, be they Chinese, Italian, something classy, or a decent slice made desirable as the night drags on and your stomach seeks solace in the form of booze-absorbing foodstuffs.
Fatima's
294 Cleveland St
Redfern, NSW 2016, Australia
Fatima's is supposed to stay open till 3 a.m., but given the waitstaff's tendency for getting stoned, it's not uncommon to find the place dark and empty at a much earlier … hour. If the gods are smiling and the bongs are quiet, you'll be able to indulge in a Lebanese feast of unparalleled quality. Well, maybe not that fantastic, but definitely a wonder at 1 or 2 in the morning. (photo)[link]
Olympic Yeeros
116 Oxford St
Darlinghurst, NSW 2010, Australia
It may seem like just another greasy pizza and kebab shop on the club strip that is Oxford Street, but Olympic is one of the originals. The high volume of traffic coming … through their doors means you're going to get a slice that's nice and fresh, though unfortunately they only offer pan crusts. The kebabs are great, and they go the extra mile by grilling the meat and letting you load up on salads and sauce before toasting it all. It's an in and out type of place -- you grab your piece and meander up the street begging for a cabbie to stop and take your drunken ass home -- but when the sun is threatening to rise and you have a blood alcohol level rivaling the hoff, that's exactly what you need. The Lincoln
36 Bayswater Rd
Kings Cross, NSW 2011, Australia
More of a bar and club, the Lincoln features an upstairs lounge with a kitchen that stays open till 2 a.m. Sink into one of the banquettes or sprawl over the ottomans and … soak up the decadent atmosphere whilst eating the sort of food you really shouldn't be consuming at this time of night. Dean's
5 Kellett St
Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia
It's run by a surly bunch of lesbians who really don't go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and the wine list has two choices (white or red), but Dean's still … has a certain je ne sais quoi that convinces you it's a good idea to visit. That and the nachos -- pure gold at 3 a.m. (photo)[link]
Caffe Roma
9 Kellett St
Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia
If you're hankering for decent Italian after hours, head to Caffe Roma. Serving up classic thin crust pizza, antipasti, pasta, and even steaks till dawn daily, Roma is a … blessing. Grab a table out front in the courtyard and make use of the supplied crayons to amuse yourself because the service is beyond slow. That said, the food is worth the wait and won't break the bank.[link]
Aperitif
7 Kellett St
Potts Point, NSW 2011, Australia
A chilled oasis in the heart of King's Cross where you can quench your thirst with a decent bottle of wine and satisfy your hunger with duck rillettes, a charcuterie … selection, or a classic cheese plate till 3 a.m. The perfect place to kick back if you feel like hanging out till late but don't want to put up with the crowded nearby bars or are hankering for something a little more refined for a late supper than the usual post-midnight kebabs or pies. BBQ King
18 - 20A Goulburn St
Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia
Another late night Chinatown haunt, BBQ King is the place to go if you get a hankering for duck or pork in the wee hours. Generally open till 3 or 4 a.m., it's a fair bit … cheaper than the nearby Golden Century and not as overrun with crowds. It may look a little tattered, but it's what's on the plate that matters. Grab the BBQ pork and roast duck combo plate, and wash it down with a few Tsing Taos. (photo)[link]
Golden Century
393 Sussex St
Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia
GC's is a Sydney institution. From the yum cha crowds in the morning to the hordes of ravenous chefs and waiters who arrive in the wee hours, there's a queue out the door … from opening to close. While they're renowned for the crab and lobster tanks, it's is the 4 a.m. close that really matters. (photo)[link]
Harry's Café de Wheels
Cowper Wharf Rd
Woolloomooloo, NSW 2011, Australia
Every guide to anything remotely Sydney-esque seems to have Harry's pop up. It's open late, it's by the water, you can blearily gaze at the nearby navy ships, and Russell … Crowe lives across the street. The pies are pretty average, truth be told. Get the pie floater, peas, mash and gravy on top of a beef pie for the full experience, but if you're after a truly great pie, you're better off heading up to King's Cross and grabbing one from the Pie Face chain.
