New York's Other Chinatown

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Flushing%20Main%20Fixed.jpgIf you take the long ride on the 7 train, past the Unisphere to the end of the line in Queens, you'll come to New York's other great Chinatown: Flushing. If you love authentic Asian food, visiting Flushing is worth the long trip; imagine a Chinatown minus the slack-jawed tourists, plus even cheaper food and booze. To many New Yorkers, Prince Street and Main Street present wall-to-wall uncharted culinary playlands. Don't limit yourself to just the restaurants. The availability of hard to find Asian goods also rewards those visiting the grocery stores and open-air markets, which have so much fresh aquatic life that at times they seem more like aquariums. Here are just a few of the great eateries that Flushing has to offer.

Love Café

38-14 Prince St
Queens, NY 11354

If you have some affection for Taiwanese Karaoke and smoking indoors, then Love Café is the place for you. The staff was very warm, even if our communication was hampered by our inability to speak to our waitress in her native language. Be warned that three Budweisers will set you back a little over twenty bucks. [link]

Flushing Mall

136-31 39th Ave
Queens, NY 11354

Though I'm not sure how many nationalities are represented at the Flushing Mall, suffice it to say there are quite a few. Generally we're not in favor of visiting mall food courts, but for the Flushing Mall, we're willing to make an exception. Whether it be Taiwanese dumplings or Malaysian beef jerky, the Flushing Mall food court is great way for less adventurous among us to get to know authentic Asian cuisine. The mall isn't open late, so make sure you get there at a reasonable time. [link]

Lu's Seafood Restaurant

38-18 Prince St
Queens, NY 11354

Lu's won points right away for letting us bring our own bottle of booze into the restaurant . The clams and black beans were great, as was the spicy octopus. The beef and noodles were a little bit bland, but the food is cheap enough that even with drinks (that you can order) you can still afford to order adventurously. [link]

Kelly's Pub

143-11 41st Ave
Queens, NY 11355

Kelly's pub provides the perfect trifecta of classic New York vice with gambling, smoking, and drinking. The Budweiser runs about three dollars a bottle, and you can scream your head off at the ponies because Kelly's carries the races. And last time I was there, I was offered bootleg porno DVDs by a wandering saleswoman who came in off the street. Bonus. [link]

Corner 28 Restaurant

40-28 Main St
Queens, NY 11354

Expect to wait in line at Corner 28, both for a table and at the take away window. The Peking Duck sandwiches pack in the locals, and at a dollar each they are a real steal. If you would like to sit down for a proper meal, you must find your way upstairs. The prices up there are a little steep, and the space is cramped, but the food merits a visit. [link]

Gem Wines and Liquors

40th Rd
Queens, NY

When starting out a night of culinary exploration in Queens it's best to fortify yourself with a little bit of rice wine. Gem Wines has a great selection of hard to find Asian booze to fortify yourself for a night on the town. The staff is a little abrasive, but don't let that stop you from grabbing a bottle here. Spicy and Tasty

39-07 Prince St
Queens, NY 11354

One of the only Flushing restaurants with a two-star rating from the New York Times, Spicy and Tasty lives up to its name serving inexpensive (cash only) and delicious Sichuan food. S&T has got your organ meat needs covered: the menu features plenty of tripe and duck feet along with its other well loved specialties. It will be spicy, so make sure you get a Tsing Tao to wash it all down and kill the burn. [link]
