Going for Bespoke in LA

Friday, September 5, 2008

customlamain.jpgIn LA, men and women can get their hands on just about any item of clothing sold in stores, whether it's contemporary or vintage. But the danger with those options is that there's a chance -- however small -- that someone else may have the same clothes. And unless you're a slobbering slave to trends, you certainly don't want that. The only way to ensure your sartorial uniqueness is to get custom clothes made. There aren't exactly a plethora of places to do so in LA, land of brand awareness, but a few shops do specialize in made-to-order clothing. Usually we're talking men's suits, but that's not all; hence, check our map of bespoke suitmakers, with a few ethnics and women's clothing specialists thrown in.

VINSHOP USA

18192 Colima Rd
Rowland Heights, CA 91748

OK, the name alone is adorable: VIN stands for Very Important Night. As such, the store specializes in brides and grooms and wedding parties, in both western and Chinese styles. They can also put together a regular men's suit, but the real reason to come here are the cheongsams, those classic, form-fitting Chinese dresses. Lots of women look stunning in these, and it's a good idea to know if you (or your girlfriend, hint hint, holiday shopping) are one of them. [link]

Stuart Felman

259 S Robertson Blvd
Beverly Hills, CA 90211

This Beverly Hills-adjacent shop is the kind of place where autographed celeb pictures line the walls, and it's been in the same location forever. Strangely enough, it's a lot cheaper than other upscale tailors, which gave us pause. But we suppose that if it's good enough for Muhammad Ali, then it's good enough for you. [link]

Mr. Lee Custom Tailor Shop

473 S Fairfax Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90036

If you're looking for Hong Kong tailoring but prefer LA smog, you're in luck. Mr. Lee is in fact from Hong Kong, which gives him an automatic clothesmaking pedigree. His custom dress shirts are not cheap, but they are, apparently, transformative. [link]

Johnathan Behr

I'm not sure there's a more upscale suitmaker in the LA area. A suit here will cost you many, many dollars, but by all accounts it's well worth it. Johnathan likes to evoke all the old hotties from Clark Gable to Steve McQueen, and that has my swooning-woman stamp of approval. By appointment only. [link]

Fernando de Manila

4849 Fountain Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90029

Perhaps you're in the mood for something flashier today? Given the name, it's no surprise that this is a good place to get some barong tagalog, the Filipino "peasant shirt" that now shows up at many upscale events. Dresses and gowns for special occasions are also a specialty here, and they can do regular ol' suits as well. [link]

Austin Taylor

1949 S State College Blvd
Anaheim, CA 92806

The thought of a megastore in Anaheim might give some people hives, but for others it's a one-stop custom clothing destination. People regularly go out of their way to get outfitted from head to toe here, as the store also stocks all kinds of accessories from socks to wallets. [link]

Alwani's Tailoring

12470 W Washington Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90066

This go-to shop gives equal attention to men's and women's suits, and while they're not necessarily fashion conscious, they can supply all the basics and the classics. And since they're custom tailors, you could head in there with an idea for yellow leather pants, and they'd do it. [link]
