Bed & Breakfasts in Brooklyn

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

bedandbreakfastbrooklynmainimage.jpgReason number one hundred and fifty six of why Brooklyn is an awesome borough: lack of tourists. That's right -- aside from a few Best Westerns and the occasional Botanical Garden/Beacon's Closet visitor, Brooklyn is free from snow globes and hot peanuts, slow-walkers and double-decker buses ... it's a civilized and humble place to stay when in New York. For those who accommodate themselves in Brooklyn, or for New Yorkers who feel like holing up to read, take a hot bath, and escape their roommate's recent flu-driven Gossip Girl marathon, bed & breakfasts are the recommended medium. After the jump, some of Brooklyn's best B&Bs -- some, if you can believe it, not even in Park Slope.

1

The Park at Sixth Bed & Breakfast

601 6th St
Brooklyn, NY 11215

With a quote from a former US senator praising its merits, it's clear this B&B is to be discovered by a restless stay-at-home wife or a young Cambridge couple looking for a place to crash whilst they hunt for property in Park Slope. In other words, it's very nice, highly recommended, and slightly obnoxious in its covetable amenities (stainless steel kitchen, cable, washer/dryer, wifi). No Manhattanite would want to stay there, in other words, as it is less of an escape and more of a rub-your-face-in-it Brooklyn haven. Rooms range from $180-$275. [link]

Spencer Place Bed & Breakfast

15 Spencer Pl
Brooklyn, NY 11216

This tiny three-bedroom bed & breakfast is the kind of place one imagines the next great American novelist would hole up in while writing their first epic opus. The rooms are elegant but spare, and rates range from $75-$150 a night. [link]

Rugby Gardens

317 Rugby Rd
Brooklyn, NY 11226

Flatbush's premiere bed & breakfast. Just looking at this place makes me want to travel in time back to A Christmas Story memories of my middle-class childhood. One of the bedrooms even has a mini-stove that's fashioned to resemble an actual fireplace. All rooms will set you back between $140-$150. [link]

Escape Guesthouse

168 Bergen St
Brooklyn, NY 11217

Sometimes it's not a question of thread count or private baths, as much as it is "How willing are other people to bend over backwards for me?" Escape Guesthouse, with its convenient Bergen Street location, clean guestrooms, and warm living space fits the bill for standards, but what's best is their willingness to organize everything from "VIP" parties to deep-sea fishing as it strikes your fancy. Want a lobster and champagne dinner when you get home? No f-ing $150 problem. Room rates range from $205-$265. [link]

Dekoven Suites

30 Dekoven Court, Brooklyn, NY 11230

Everyone knows someone in New York. But those people, sometimes, aren't the lot you want to share towels with or have hanging around your new girlfriend. For that staying-at-a-friend's house feel (but with unused soap and fresh towels), Dekoven Suites is where to go. This old Victorian home hosts three rentable bedrooms which will keep your New York visit bedbug- and dirty-towel-free. And rates are only $130-$150 per night. [link]

Bibi's Garden

762 Westminster Rd
Brooklyn, NY 11230

Trading spaciousness for location is something New Yorkers are accustomed to, and Bibi's Garden is no exception to that rule. In Midwood, which is somewhere between Coney Island and Crowbar, sits this seven bedroom country-decorated B&B where one can be in the city yet feel upstate at only $95-$165 a night. [link]

Bed & Breakfast on the Park

113 Prospect Park West
Brooklyn, NY 11215

This Victorian bed & breakfast, nestled among the tree-lined streets of Park Slope, surely gives Hotel Rivington a run for its money. It's possible that true luxury is defined by heavy drapes, open windows, porcelain baths, home-cooked breakfasts, and front rooms that aren't fashioned to look like parlors (but actually are parlors). Rooms start at $175 a night. [link]

Akwaaba Mansion

34 Macdonough St
Brooklyn, NY 11216

The "idea" behind the Akwaaba mansion, a beautifully decorated, lavish B&B in Bed-Stuy, is personal. Monique Greenwood, while driving with her husband, Glenn, declared the following, "Why not create a bed & breakfast right here in our own neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant?". And so it was. Despite its simple provenance, this place is fit for the most glamorous Brooklyn visitors. Rooms start at $160 a night. [link]
