Manhattan Winter Drinking & Dining Outdoors-ish

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

mainpicforoutsidediningnewyorkcity.jpgWhen most restaurant/bar backyards and gardens have pulled in their tables and chairs, there are some that promise a year-round "outdoor" space. Yes, even in Manhattan. After all, we will settle for a car-exhaust fumed, ugly sidewalk cafe seat most any day of the year we can. It comes as no surprise then that backyard gardens are becoming enclosed, heated, and winter-proofed at all costs for the blustery days ahead. Where are these temperature-regulated, vegetation-filled, patio furniture-strewn oases? A guide awaits you, and feel free to comment on malfunctioning heaters or less than waterproof roof coverings.

The Sixth Ward

191 Orchard St
New York, NY 10002

This beer garden has been in action for the past 2 years. Supposedly the Guinness has been checked on by a beer specialist and the eats are cheap and tend towards the Irish. Oh yeah, and there's also a 1,500 sq. ft year-round patio for drinking your face off.[link]

The Park

118 10 Ave
New York, NY 10011

The Park in Chelsea boasts a year-round 4,000 sq. ft garden decked out with trees, vines, tin deer, bird feeders and gnomes (!), but this ain't your small town-neighbor's lawn ornament-strewn yard. Try the ginger fizz or cucumber margarita and remember to come back when it's actually warm![link]

Paradou

8 Little West 12th St
New York, NY 10014

A calm respite from the clubs in the Meatpacking District? Paradou serves up provencal dishes and champagne brunches on tables made out of wine crates in their "hidden" garden, and as a bonus, host a regular "Dirty Bingo" night.[link]

The Delancey

168 Delancey St
New York, NY 10002

If you haven't heard about The Delancey's rooftop bar, well, where have you been?!? It is now "fully heated," and I'm glad they make that distinction as opposed to those bars, such as Pete's Candy Store, that, yes, have heaters but are nowhere near to being FULLY heated. N.B.: it is also FULLY crowded.[link]

Cloister Cafe

238 E 9th St
New York, NY 10003

Go for the ambiance, the hookah bar, and the covered heated patio, but do not go for the food: the menu, with fettuccine Alfredo, French onion soup, and buffalo wings, does not quite fit the setting. But the courtyard is strikingly beautiful and lush enough to make a trip worth the mediocre eating.[link]

Ava Lounge

210 W 55th St
New York, NY 10019

A penthouse lounge extends to the roof 15 stories up on top of the Dream Hotel, and while you can sit in style on white banquettes, sipping $19 cocktails and gawking at erotic art, you will be doing so at the mercy of the elements, i.e., check on the heaters, no check on enclosure.[link]

August

359 Bleecker St
New York, NY 10014

In the words of the invaluable New York Post, August is "super intimate, super chic and super tasty", but don't trust a review with a bad case of "super" anaphora; rather, check out critically acclaimed restaurant with rustic decor and a small menu with mostly satisfying dishes, in addition to a similarly themed garden in back, seen in this post's main pic.[link]
