The Big Apple's Best Bathrooms

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

worldtoiletday111908.jpgHappy World Toilet Day everyone! In honor of this illustrious holiday we're honoring the best bathrooms our fine city has to offer. Everyone knows, when you gotta go, you gotta go. But it isn't that easy to find clean accommodating bathrooms when you're out and about in New York. So, to help you out next time, here are some primo bathrooms where you can make an inconspicuous emergency pit stop.

Schiller's Liqour Bar

131 Rivington St
New York, NY 10002

No one will notice you slipping downstairs at this noisy and crowded spot, and the bathroom itself is worth the trip. There are designated separate doors for men and women but the first room you walk into (with sinks and mirrors) is actually unisex. As you can imagine, confusion ensues (and more handwashing than normal). Other pluses include soft lighting, clean toilets, and a full length mirror, a rarity on the LES bar scene.

The behemoth in the Meatpacking District has a bar downstairs, so you don't have to be dining there to use their immaculate bathroom. The toilet seat lids lift automatically, the seats are heated, and there are buttons ("front", "rear", "pulsating", "gentle", and "flush"), not to mention the trippy glass-n-flower stall walls.

Saint Vincent's Hospital Manhattan: General Information

202 W 12th St
New York, NY 10011

While waiting out a sudden rainstorm under the large awning of St. Vincent's hospital in the West Village, I suddenly felt the need for a restroom. Not knowing where else to go, I just snuck round the corner into the emergency room. They are totally nice, don't ask you any questions, and the toilets are clean. Hell, it's an emergency room--that's what they're there for.

Spuyten Duyvil

359 Metropolitan Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11211

A bar review in Metro New York mentioned this great bathroom. To prevent drunken idiots from writing graffiti on the bathroom walls, the proprietor has installed blackboard with chalk in the restrooms. This is a great pit stop because a) you will have fun while taking care of business and b) they are basically inviting you to stop in for a free pee by making their bathroom so damn cool. Not only that but the beers are amazing here and thus ensues a vicious cycle: pee, drink beer, pee more, drink more.
