Seeing Sydney From Above

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

sydney061709.jpgSydney is a city ripe for sightseeing. From iconic landmarks like the Opera House, to Darling Harbour nightlife, there's plenty of attractions with which to fill your days. But, whether you're a local or temporary visitor, few sights prove as worthwhile as those captured from tens to hundreds of feet up. So, if you're looking to impress a special someone or are just looking for unique vistas, here are five spots offering aerial views of Sydney.

1

Sydney Tower

86 - 100 Market St
t, Sydney New South Wales 2000, Australia

This is the classic "let's build a giant tower for no obvious reason" landmark. Conveniently located in the middle of the CBD, you can't miss it: just look up for the needle-like structure. If you do get lost, it's called Centrepoint by locals. You can pay to go up to the glass floored viewing platform or head to the revolving restaurant and bar for the price of a drink. A skywalk also adds to the appeal -- there you can be strapped into a harness and take a guided tower onto the roof.[link]

Bridgeclimb

5 Cumberland St
t, The Rocks New South Wales 2000, Australia

With this organization you can take guided walks to the top of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. Now in its 10th year, you can choose either a straight climb to the top, or a second, wonkier tour for the more engineering minded that goes throughout the bridge's structure. If you're on a budget, the southern pylon has a free museum and observation deck that takes you about three-quarters as high as the paid walk.[link]

Shangri-la Hotel

176 Cumberland St
t, The Rocks New South Wales 2000, Australia

If exercise and tourist traps aren't your thing, the Shangri-La Hotel in The Rocks features a cocktail lounge on its 36th floor with a sweeping view across the city from ceiling to floor windows. Give your evening a touch of class by taking in the sunset with a cocktail before descending into your nightly mayhem of choice.[link]

Sydney Seaplanes

Sydney Harbour Tunnel, New South Wales 2000, Australia

If you have a special somebody you feel like impressing, consider this romantic option. The company drops you off at a secluded and inaccessible cove up in the northern beaches with a picnic basket, leaving you to your own devices for a few hours. Then it's time for a scenic tour of Sydney and its coast by air. Don't worry if you don't have anyone to impress -- there are standard joy flights around the harbor area available as well.[link]

Sydney Heli Tours

Building 472 Heliport Ross Smith Ave, Mascot, NSW 2020, Australia (02) 9317 3402

Seaplanes are stylin', but a helicopter is pure pimp. Both this company and Blue Sky have flight options that range from 20-minute harbor and beach joy flights to whole-day expeditions up into wine country or across the Blue Mountains. You can either charter your own plane or book a share trip, but either way be prepared to brutalize your plastic.[link]
