Los Angeles Tiki Bars

Thursday, November 5, 2009

grassskirt.jpgThe tiki bar was invented in Los Angeles, when Ernest Gantt opened "Don the Beachcomber" back in 1933. Since then, the concept of the Polynesian drinkery has bounced to the South Pacific and back, colonizing the rest of the West Coast and the world. Back in LA, summer is heating up. Weathered Angelenos can already feel the potential onslaught of a full-fledged heat wave. So, those interested in toasting the summer season with a cool drink in hand might consider (re)visiting your local LA tiki bar, as the city is home to several. Here are six of our favorites.

1

Trader Vic's Mai Tai Bar

9876 Wilshire Blvd
Beverly Hills, CA 90210

It's no secret that the closing of Trader Vic's in Beverly Hills was devastating for a lot of Angelenos. While the poolside bar that replaced it pales in comparison, we felt it deserved honorable mention, if only because of its relationship to the birthplace of the mai tai. A few items from the original restaurant were relocated to this new lounge, which is poolside at the Beverly Hilton. Tropical drinks and a few pupus are served.[link]

Bahooka

4505 Rosemead Blvd
Rosemead, CA 91770

Featured in the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Bahooka has been serving their famous Polynesian ribs and exotic drinks since 1976. The restaurant is decorated with bamboo, tikis, lanterns, and over 100 aquariums that house exotic fish. The menu is pretty standard surf and turf, but the bar offers a wide selection of tropical drinks, all of which can be served flaming.[link]

Puka Bar

710 W Willow St
Long Beach, CA 90806

One of Long Beach's most popular tiki bars, Puka will transport you to a tropical wonderland and get you rip-roaring drunk in the process. Decorated with custom bamboo furniture, hand-carved 100 pound tiki sculptures, velvet paintings, and puffer fish lamps, Puka Bar takes the art of tiki decor even further with carved tiki patterns on the beer taps and along the full length of the bar by master tiki carver Crazy Al Evans. Themed drinks such as the "Witch Doctor" and "Land Pirate" are carefully concocted, and a DJ spins six nights a week starting around 9:30 p.m.[link]

Tonga Hut

12808 Victory Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 91606

Remember those episodes of The Brady Bunch where the whole family vacations in Hawaii, and Bobby discovers an ancient tiki that casts a curse on everyone? Tonga Hut is probably where the Brady Bunch writers came up with the ideas for those episodes. Opened in 1958, the North Hollywood tiki lounge retains a lot of the original decor, which includes a bamboo-ridged, kidney-shaped drop ceiling, green booths, fountains, and giant tiki gods. Tropical drinks are served in tiki mugs with umbrellas and fresh fruit, and they host a daily happy hour from 4 to 8 p.m.[link]

Tiki-Ti

4427 W Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90027

With 86 tropical drinks on the menu, many of them created by the owners, and a 46-year legacy, Tiki-Ti is a Los Angeles institution. Opened in 1961, the historic little bar has passed down through three generations, and has been owner-operated all the way. The space is chock full of authentic tiki decorations, and they're so serious about what they do that they don't even serve beer or wine. It's all about the tiki experience and the tropical drink. "Ray's Mistake" is their most popular cocktail, and "The Stealth" is their strongest. Don't say we didn't warn you.[link]

Purple Orchid

221 Richmond St
El Segundo, CA 90245

This tiki bar in El Segundo packs all the punch you'd hope for from a tiki bar; not to mention all of the curiously strong, even more curiously titled drinks like the Funky Monkey and the Ginger Bimbo. They also have $10 Martini & Manicure nights on Mondays for the ladies.
