Sydney Late Night Eats
Everyday on Gridskipper we give you a new map. Some are new, some are fetched from our archive, newly updated. Happy Gridskipping. One of the problems with Sydney is the dearth of late night kitchens. After 10ish you tend to find your options limited to dodgy kebabs, crappy pizza, or whatever travesty the Quickie Mart has warming up in the pie heater. As always, we have tracked down the city's hidden gems, be they Chinese, Italian, something classy, or a decent slice made desirable as the night drags on and your stomach seeks solace in the form of booze-absorbing foodstuffs.

Surry Hills Pub Crawl
Surry Hills is Sydney's boho/indie inner city enclave with a great mix of shops, galleries, cafes and the like. It's predominately a residential area, so its nightlife pretty much revolves around pubs that for the most part are forced to close down around midnight. Never fear -- there are a few open till the wee hours, and Kings Cross is but a 15-minute stroll away. With that in mind, it's definitely recommended that you aim to start your night in Surry Hills and then move onwards and upwards. But before you do, try to take in as many of these fine establishments as possible.

Sydney Beer Gardens
The beer garden is loved by almost every culture, race, and creed on this planet. Whilst the odd teetotaler might shun its glory, the rest of humanity understands the joy that comes from sitting out in the sun and quenching one's thirst with some amber gold or a cheeky pinot grigio or two. If ever there was a city purpose built for the beer garden, it has to be Sydney with its combination of gloriously sunny days, beautiful vistas, and a population with a reputation for drunkenness that stretches back to the dawn of time.

Drink Till Dawn in Sydney
There comes a point in the night when all the half-decent bars have closed, but you're still keen to continue your Genghis Khan impression and rampage through the city's alcohol supply. Genghis refused to pay a cover though, and so should you. Here's the best of a bad lot for those keen on drinking through to daylight.

Weekend Markets in Sydney
The weekend market can be a blissful way to pass away the morning, saving mental strain, pushing that throbbing hangover into submission with the help of a coffee, and puttering about among the secondhand books, vintage tees, and farmers' produce. Unfortunately, this idyllic scene can just as easily become a nightmare jumble of plastic clock radios, broken lawn chairs and irate pensioners. Follow our advice and you'll steer clear of Sydney's less salubrious markets, and be able to return home with tales of divine biodynamic goat cheese tasted by the harbor and stalls full of young fashion designers.

Sydney's Best Seafood
Every Australian on the planet is sick of hearing some idiot ask them about throwing a shrimp on their barbie. Although we do love the barbie, we call them prawns and sometimes, well quite often really, we can't be arsed to go to the effort of cooking them ourselves. Given that Sydney is all about the beaches and the harbor, and being by the water, it all tends to make everybody lazy and desire fresh seafood, I dare say you'll find yourself in a similar predicament. So when you get a hankering for some fresh seafood, head to one of these locations.

Seeing Sydney from Above
Any sightseeing trip requires at least one visit to the top of something really, really high that allows you to gaze down on the city you find yourself in. Surry Hills Galleries
The gallery and museum run on any trip can get a bit arduous, what with the screaming children being dragged around for a dose of culture by well meaning parents and the rooms upon rooms of 18th century water colour landscapes. Kicking off a night out with a visit to a more contemporary gallery opening yields you not only cheap beer, but also the opportunity to make some connections and glean some inside knowledge on where to head later that night whilst giving you a dose of culture that reads well in the email back to mum and dad. Inner city Surry Hills is full of edgy and artist run spaces that put on a wide variety of shows and regular parties. Here's a few of the best for you to check out.

The Rocks Nightlife
The Rocks is Sydney's heritage area, a postcard perfect mix of picturesque cobblestone lanes lined with 19th century sandstone buildings. Butting up against the Harbour Bridge and gazing back across Sydney Cove to the Opera House the area has more than its fair share of cheesy tourist shops to spend your day seeking out or more likely, avoiding. When you've finished stocking up on stuffed koalas you'll find more than enough drinking holes from old school pubs to glam harbour side cocktail bars at which to slate your thirst and keep you occupied till the wee hours.

Sydney's Best Tapas Bars
Tapas styled dining, no matter whether it's billed as mezze, sharing plates, or some other permutation, is becoming ever more popular in Sydney. Originally only found downtown in the "Spanish Quarter," a few more options have appeared in Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, and beyond, with a move away from just the straight traditional Spanish offerings.

Kings Cross Cocktail Bars
Kings Cross has traditionally been Sydney's red light district: strip clubs, brothels, backpacker hostels, and seedy 24-hour pubs. Considerably cleaner than in the past, the vice is still there -- but nestled amongst it, a series of decidedly more upmarket cocktail bars have appeared. The latest addition to the the area, The Lincoln, exemplifies the trend with three floors of Art Deco decadence set on the site of a former strip club. But that's far from the only high-class option in today's Kings Cross.
