Los Angeles: Where To Catch A Game, or, A Downtown With No Sports Bars

When we wrote about downtown's Trifecta we were like "sure they're douchebags but at least they're douchebags running a sports bar in downtown LA." And then when we wrote about the Grand Sports Bar we were like "they kind of suck but at least they're running a sports bars in downtown LA." And then both of them went out of business. And then the Flower Sports Bar went out of business. And now downtown is more or less bereft of watering holes servicing both man's need for alcoholic nourishment and his need to drunkenly declare that he's about to fight that out-of-town sports fan over there. Luckily downtown still has a few bars and restaurants where you can catch the occasional game. If you show up at just the right time. If they happen to be open that day. If they haven't closed early. If you're lucky. Fuck. (photo) More »

Top Picks: Paris Cafes with Free Wi-Fi

As we mentioned last summer, Paris provides free Wi-Fi access from more than 260 public parks, gardens, and monuments. A beautiful idea, but those of us with real work to do need a table and a beer. Helping us out are a number of cafés and bistros that serve free Wi-Fi along with their liquid offerings. And profiling these joints is a nifty little website that rounds up more than 140 hotspots in Paris and plots them on an easy-to-use map. Cafés Wifi selects their monthly favorites — those cafés that provide a free, fast, and always working connection, along with pleasant working atmosphere — and reports on the price, the clientele, and the number of electrical outlets. It's a freelancer's wet dream. This very article, including the photo, was posted from #4, la Fée Verte. More »

Gay Bar Hopping in Philly

Chelsea Clinton hit Philly on a gay bar crawl Friday, causing quite a commotion. The potential two-time First Daughter was "mobbed by local gays and lesbians;" at least one woman claims to have "grabbed her ass." In total Clinton hit four Philadelphia spots (the first four on our list), joining director Rob Reiner and Governor Ed Rendell on a crawl to gain Democratic support during the primaries. But, enough about politics... where to rub shoulders with Philadelphia's same-sex-oriented finest? Chelsea Clinton's stops supplemented with a couple other picks after the jump. (MSNBC]

A new trend has been taking place at nightspots around NYC: earlier closing times. The mayor and the State Liquor Authority are clamping down on liquor licenses, and the only ones being issued right now are only valid until 2am. Some NYers are predicting that in the future, 4am closing times at bars and clubs may be a thing of the past. [Gothamist]

NYC isn't the only east coast metropolis cracking down on bars and clubs. Beantown's "licensing czar says he's banning 'bottle service'." Boston Licensing Board Chairman Daniel Pokaski has said he will have a zero tolerance policy with regard to it — his position is that it's against current city and state laws. [via]

Summery Cocktails in LA

The recent hot spell reminded all of us that summer — glorious, sun-scorched, face-melting summer — has officially arrived in LA. The possibilities for daytime activities are endless: hiking, hitting the beach, lying on top of the covers with the shades drawn sipping water and wondering if it's possible to sleep until October ... but hey, at least the sun eventually goes down, and when it does, what's better than a crisp, refreshing cocktail? Or seven? Here are some hot spots (har dee har) for finishing the day with a nice summery beverage. Do your part for the cause by adding your own favorites in the comments. More »

Los Angeles: Get Drunk In Culver City

Although not always apparent to the Los Angeles newcomer, there are plenty of nightlife options available around town in places other than Hollywood or West Hollywood. East you'll find downtown, west gets you to Santa Monica, and North gets you to the Valley. But what about South? You may think the only real reasons to head in that directions is an airport run or road trip to San Diego, and you'd be correct. However, if you do find yourself on the wrong side of the 10 in search of some nightlife, you will find some pretty good options in Culver City. I've come up with a list to get you started, but add your own notables in the comments.

NYC: Free Fancy Bar Food

Last year we brought you free bar food in NYC. But as tax day approaches and the economy remains generally shitty, I figured the time was right to also embrace the more upscale snacks that are a staple of New York's fancier bars. It only makes sense that you should get a little somethin' somethin' to complement your $14 martini. After the jump, the most delicious snacks that come for free (as long as you don't count that overpriced cocktail). (photo)

Tokyo Bar Bunnies Photo Gallery

Web design zine, Openers Gallery, has a preview of photographer Yabuta Osami's project "Tokyo Bunny Girls." For the series, Osami took black-and-white pictures of bar hostesses in Downtown Tokyo. The artist says his photos are "erotic/sexy but elegant." The racy shots show tired-looking waifish women writhing around in lingerie and their trademark bunny ears. Osami cites magazine photography as a major influence, and his bunny girl photos have a documentary quality. I see these images as portraits of a hard profession— they're far more sad than they are sexy. Some of the photos show the bar bunnies out on the streets, while others seem to capture the hostesses in their places of employment. More Tokyo bar bunny shots after the jump. [via] More »

New York's Oldest Bars

A while back we rounded up LA's oldest bars, most of which are pushing the century mark. But now it's NYC's turn to weigh in with our own long history of drunken immigrants, downtown hookers, and esteemed literati. We might have nothing on all the ancient European drinking wells, but New York still has some old-ass bars, and we've compiled a list of the oldest based on when they started serving booze (as opposed to when their buildings were raised). And just for the hell of it we've indicated which president was in office at the time each bar was founded. Feel free to recommend additional frothy relics or question our historical accuracy in the comments or via the tipline.

DC's Gayest Gay Bars

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, which bar's the queerest of them all? Well, do you mean "gay" or do you mean, like gay? Because Washington's gayer than sushi and scented candles on Sunday, but the district also boasts one of the highest concentrations of homos in America. If it's "gay" you're looking for then skip to the mall and all around the RNC. If you simply want gay, then you must go into a local bar that has men inside it. Sadly, some of the best bars closed down and other bars just suck. More »

Surviving South Street Seaport

New York's Chinatown, Little Italy, and Time Square are all well known as hellish tourist-infested destinations: less iconic but still equally odious and obnoxious is South Street Seaport. Overpriced chain stores, horrendously terrible restaurants, and roaming packs of tourists: It's a shopping mall like any other for not-so-adventurous out-of-towners to feel comfortable in. Still, there are smatterings of greatness (or at least goodness) strewn among this wasteland. Tucked in the the nooks and crannies of the neighborhood are some honest-to-God gems. And as the weather turns nicer, the neighborhood provides opportunities to drink outside, check out the great turn of the century architecture, listen to free music, dine well, and enjoy the things that make NYC such a great place to live — and visit.

Hardcore Knitting In SF

"Hard Core" and "knitting" don't often turn up in the same sentence, but in this era of makers and doers and DIY, knitting has gained prominence as the pseudo-ironic pastime of choice for urban hipsters and their grandmas alike. I say "pseudo" because it's very easy to get sucked into this hobby until you dream earnestly of purls and puke circular needles. That's the other side of hardcore here, along with sweaters with knit skulls on them and people who store their needles in their piercings (I kid you not). More »

Games Nights in DC

Bars across the District know everything is more fun after a few cocktails, and childhood board games are no exception. In the mood for a little Carmen Sandiego? You're in luck. A number of local watering holes give tipsy patrons the chance to indulge their inner kid with games ranging from Jenga to checkers. Finally, you'll understand how your parents made it through four consecutive games of Monopoly. Check out the following spots if you're looking for some old-school entertainment. Suggestions welcome via the comments or the tip line, and don't forget our round-up of DC pub quizzes. (photo)

NYC Rooftop Drinking

When the weather turns warm, New Yorkers demand open-air nightlife. Sidewalk tables and back gardens get packed quickly and stay that way till the wee hours. The most aspirational lounge lizards head upwards to the city's rooftops, and with the inevitability of the season comes the roundup of New York rooftop bars. So let's kick it off pro-actively rather than waiting for someone else's version. This list is moderately selective, avoiding the exclusive (i.e. Soho House) and requiring a certain minimum altitude (sorry, cabanas at the Maritime Hotel). Also trying to vary a bit by geography and type. More suggestions welcome in the comments and tips.

Media Drinking Hangouts

Writers like to drink. Other forms of substance abuse are often indulged in, but drinking is the only one that's state sanctioned. After a long day of drinking at their desks, sometimes journalists like to hit the town. And by town, we mean the closest, cheapest bar. So here's a map of media-bar hangouts. Don't be surprised if you walk into one of the bars and hear people discussing The Elements of Style or the underappreciated genius of Joshua Ferris. Know of any media bars not on this list? Send them in, and check out our earlier list of New York blogger bars.

When Wonks Attack: DC Pub Quizzes

In Washington, nothing says you've made it like proving you can out-drink and outsmart your friends. The city is overrun with wonks, all of whom seem to be drawn to DC's favorite beer-swilling, answer-hurling ritual: the pub quiz. As bars across the city cash in on your inner (or outer) nerd, be sure to check out the list below for some prime pub quiz spots. Suggestions welcome via the comments or the tip line. (photo)

Berlin Eats: Wolfing Down in Wilmersdorf

Once the happening center of Sixties West Berlin, Wilmersdorf was a splash of international jetset color dropped into a gritty, grey Eastern Europe. Around Wittenbergplatz and down the glamtastic Ku'Damm, the West's besieged citizenry enjoyed the fruits of the free market ripened in the political hothouse of the Cold War. Wilmersdorf's crowded cafes and smoke-filled steakhouses served as beacons of delectable, Western decadence shining out across the captive nations. But reunification was not kind to the leafy district. Berlin's cultural vanguard moved hungrily into the crumbling facades of P-Berg's and Mitte's mietkäsernen. As the all-night parties, renegade waffle shops, and anarchic artist's squats began to remake the reputation of the once off-limits neighborhoods, Wilmersdorf was reduced to hawking hotdogs and T-shirts to tourists too timid to make their way across town to the wild, wild East.
