Some good burger news: Madison
Some good burger news: Madison Square Park institution Shake Shack is planning on opening a branch near the Museum of Natural History. The New York Post reports that it won't be outdoors, like the original, but instead at 77th and Columbus (the space once occupied by Jacque-Imo's). In a part of town where finding a decent lunch can sometimes be a bit of a challenge, this is great news for Upper West Siders and museum-going parents from all over. [via]

Tonight, as part of the
Tonight, as part of the Food Network's Wine & Food Festival, Miami's South Beach will play host to a Burger Bash, which will include 18 burger joints from all over the nation competing for the crown of the best burger. Over 1,600 attendees (who each paid a whopping $150 a ticket) will be running rampant, tasting burgers like the Shake Shack's Shackburger and local Bistro One LR's "Gruyere fondue, pretzel burger." The winner will be announced by none other than endorsement queen Rachael Ray. [NYT]

SF's Burgers Are Better Than Yours
San Francisco is a burrito town. That being said, we do burgers right too. Gridskipper has talked burgers from Los Angeles and New York, but what of San Francisco? SF burgers, it's your time to shine. We've got the greasy spoons to the pretentious joints, and I even traveled by car to bring this list to the masses. If I missed your favorite, plead your case in the comments or tips. All your SF burger porn is after the jump.

Berlin Burgers with a Side of Politics
MLK day passed here in Berlin with little ceremony and definitely no time off. But if you're like me and fascinated by the political climate in the States right now, you honored Martin Luther King, Jr. by watching Obama's speech at the Ebenezer Church and crying like a little girl. That was a good speech. But who to talk about it with? The Germans? Not likely. They just want to harp on what a douchebag Bush is, which is true but painfully old news. What you need are some Americans. Unfortunately, they're not always so easy to find, especially when you've moved abroad to avoid them in the first place. Unless, of course, you know where the hamburgers are, in which case Americans must be close by. Plus, the word burger in German, if you add an umlaut to the "u," translates to "citizen," so political jokes are already rampant in the city's hamburger locales -- making them the perfect place to mock your least favorite candidate. That being said, and based on broad stereotypes of national appetites, here's a quick list of burger joints in Berlin, so you can debate with your own kind.

Those sly devils over at
Those sly devils over at Gadling figured out a way to get a free shuttle from LAX to an In-N-Out Burger nearby. The trick is to take a shuttle to the Parking Spot parking structure on Sepulveda Boulevard, located right next to an In-N-Out. The shuttles leave from all terminals of the airport, and the ride is just 5-10 minutes. [Gadling]

New York City Sliders
Ever since White Castle grilled their first miniscule beef patty in 1921, the slider (or "Slyder" in WC parlance) has maintained an integral presence in American burgerology. And while traditionally a Midwestern phenomenon -- out-promoted elsewhere by full-sized fast fooders -- in recent years, they've caught on back East. Of course, we've already surveyed NYC's full-size burgers once and again. So for a change of stature, put down your quarter pounder and dine on the following list of New York's best bite-sized burgers. Other suggestions may be broiled in the comments or fried in the tipline.

Best NYC Burgers 2.0
In a city like New York, no list of best burgers will ever be considered complete, especially by New Yorkers themselves. We gave you our top contenders, weighed your input, and now we're back for more. Our arteries are slightly more clogged, but we're that much more burger-wise for the meaty experience.

New York's Best Burgers
Oh hamburger, that all-American meal of the (strictly Christian) gods. If this summer found you stuck in the city instead of on the beach, singeing your eyebrows over a barbecue grill, don't give up. For every restaurant in New York City, there's another burger worth trying. We have our own first-round picks, but of course we overlooked your favorite(s) because we have no taste and hate freedom. Check our recommendations, then make your own via the comments or the usual email.

Best Burger Bars in Sydney
Once upon a time, the definition of a hamburger was forced upon us by multinational conglomerates pouring out millions of identical slim meaty pickings between sweetened buns. While I'm not one to argue against sweet buns, they're best left out of the burger mix. Sydney's gourmet burger scene is expanding by the day, mocking the multitude of multicultural tastes we'd embraced what seems like only moments before. But as long as the new contenders spurn the grease-filled, soggy, artery-clogging burgers of old, their popularity will likely only continue to grow.

The LA Burger: Part 2 of an Infinite Series
For a town full of health fanatics, LA sure loves a good burger. Furthermore, Angelenos have rather strong feelings on the subject. To placate yon angry mobs who so diplomatically objected to certain lacunae in our first LA burger-stand roundup, here's a supplementary listing of excellent locations to enjoy a quarter pound of atherosclerosis. With fries.

The LA Hamburger Stand
Having already offered a guide to the city's best veggie burgers, we're back to talk about red meat. Specifically, red meat as peddled by the LA hamburger stand, be it a local fast food chain or a dilapidated shack on the street. Therefore, here are eight of our favorite places around town to grab an all-American artery-annihilating burger on the go.

Milwaukee's Butter Burgers
If the stomach padding enticements of homemade sausages and freshly brewed beer weren't enough to get foodie travelers on the plane to Milwaukee, I think I found the perfect motivator -- butter burgers. Turns out this unimaginably unhealthy foodstuff actually exists and has been served for ages in calorie-happy Wisconsin. I first heard about it because of A Hamburger Today's Beach Burger Bash this past weekend, where attendees scarfed excessive amounts of butter, onion, and pimento cheese burgers at Harry's Water Taxi Beach in Queens.

Painless Veggie Burgers
When forced to eat a meatless patty, many carnivores will ask, "Are veggie burgers really cruelty-free in the larger sense?" In this town they are. New York offers a variety of delicious and healthful (and some not so healthful) alternatives to the played-out beef and turkey burgers. Here are a few worth mentioning.

Great LA Veggie Burgers
Great veggie burgers are surprisingly few and far between in health-conscious Los Angeles. A lot of unexplored territory still exists within the gastronomic realm of the veggie burger, and it's an art form that offers a lot of unfulfilled potential. There are, however, a handful of Los Angeles establishments at the forefront of veggie burger ingenuity, and they range from Yoga studio cafes to Irish pubs.

Burger Cravings in Paris
The Americans may lay claim to naming rights, but when it comes to locating the best of the world's haute hamburgers Paris is surely battling for top-tier supremacy. The secret's in the beef: as vociferous carnivores, no one cares more for the quality of their mince then the French. Of course hamburgers aren't all about blood-red meat and golden-fried frites. At five-star palace hotel, The Crillon, moist tuna replaces beef while even vegetarians are pulled in to the circle of love with a tofu option that - while leaving purists cold - is good news for grazers. As for pronunciation, just drop the 'h' and give it a French twist. Vive le 'amburger.

DC's Best Burgers
Washington DC has a thriving population of bloodthirsty politicians, lobbyists, lawyers, and journalists, all of whom dine on red meat both literally and figuratively. May is National Burger Month, and we already have a solid beefy foundation upon which to build. We've covered Chicago's burgers in depth. We've written about Los Angeles burgers once or twice. Menupages has some great coverage of San Francisco's meat patties. So it's obviously our patriotic duty to create a burger guide for the nation's capitol. After the jump, you most certainly will want fries with that.

Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers
May is National Burger Month. Every year for this month, we take 30 days off from describing our three-vodka and burger lunch as "the lunch of champions" and redub it "our patriotic duty". In addition to In-N-Out, Fatburger, the Counter, Father's Office, etc, we'll be spending some quality time at Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers in Santa Monica. Prices are absurdly reasonable, with prices hovering around $7. Since you're in California, there's a plentiful veggie burger and salad selection. That's tantamount to visiting a fine seafood establishment and ordering pork, but salad people are strange. Special bonus LA burger link: Chowhoud user sebastianxx has created a Google My Map and filled it with dozens of LA burger joints. It's pretty good, but we kind of wish somebody would create one of these and link it to actual restaurant reviews.

Fraktal Bar & Restaurant
One of Prague's most popular expat hives, Fraktal Bar Restaurace in Letna serves authentic Czech cuisine such as the "breakfast enchilada." (They were also one of the first establishments to go along with the smoking ban.) However, if there's one thing every traveler has time to test, it's the quality of the expat burger. To that end, Czech Please compares and contrasts one of the Fraktal burgers with another local favorite, and gives it a thumbs up in toto. Otherwise, Fraktal serves a pretty typical menu of pubbish grub, along with a roster of drinks (try to scam an outdoor table in warm weather).

Baker Bounce
You come to Tokyo, and of course you want to sample some great Japanese food. But there comes a time when enough is enough, and you gotta have a burger. As we all know, all burgers -- and burger joints -- are not created equal, and since I've been known to enjoy the burger, I do keep track of these things. My latest find? The Tokyo Midtown branch of Baker Bounce (their first shop, and HQ, is in Sangenjaya). From their website, it looks like the main shop has some tasty steaks. But the new branch is all about the burger, and the diner-like setting suits the joint perfectly. For ¥1,000 or so, you get something massive -- we're definitely not talking your regular Tokyo-sized meal -- and tasty to boot. Even better, they have root beer on the menu, which is a true rarity in this city. Another bonus for visitors: The menu is fully bilingual, and at least two or three of the staff while I was there were foreigners and could take orders in English.

Best Burger & Comics in DC
When you've had enough of M street, or God help you, the Tombs, tuck into the "best burger in DC, six years running", at Five Guys on Wisconsin Ave NW. The bomb-proof red-and-white tiled store is designed to take a rush, and for good reason -- expect it to be slammed, but never in the weeds. Eat peanuts while you wait, and have your fixings "all the way." So basic it's almost comical, the menu consists of standard-serving double patties and generous portions of fresh-cut fries -- Boardwalk or Cajun flavor -- and that's about it. And speaking of comics, after you wash your hands, turn the corner and pick up from Pete at Big Planet Comics, the most top-notch shop in town.

Yuca's
This famous Hillhurst taco shack is most well known for excellent burritos, and it's probably one very few establishments of its type to be singled out for a James Beard award. But Yuca's is just as beloved for tacos, carnitas, cochinita pibil, and would you believe ... hamburgers? The burger itself looks delicious, though unassumingly thin. The clincher really must be the "carne asada by-product left on the grill."
