Men's Guide: Getting Groomed in DC

I still can't figure out why my boyfriend doesn't desire a day at the spa like I do. It's especially odd, because there are all kinds of barbershops, boutique salons and spas that cater to the manly men of this city. Maybe he thinks that a $100 treatment called "The Commander in Chief" that includes a manicure is both emasculating and expensive? It sounds good to me. Anyway, here are a few spots in Washington where you can clean up your filthy boyfriend. More »

DC's Overrated Restaurants, Part 2

Our first post about overrated eating in the District was wildly popular. As a result, we're putting together a list of the rest of the worst in Washington. From the Old Ebbitt Grill to Circa at Dupont, it seems this city is filled with half-assed eats. (photo) More »

DC's Independent Music Stores

If video killed the radio, then the iTunes and other downloadable music options have effectively killed the music store. OK, not entirely. While a few of the independent music stores that I had planned to include on this list — Kemp Hill Music and Orpheus Records — have closed or will soon, a handful of DC's independent music stores have survived the war. Here's a few of my favorites — add yours in the comments.

DC's Most Overrated Restaurants

When I told my friend that I wanted to do a post on DC's most overrated restaurants, he sagely said that there is not enough room on the Internet to list them all. It's a phenomenon I don't understand. Unrelenting praise and enormous crowds in this city are always elevating mediocre, overpriced restaurants. Could it be that Washington as a whole lacks taste? Put down your theories in the comments; in the meantime, here's a list of the worst of the worst.

DC in the Movies

Washington has long served as the backdrop for Hollywood blockbusters — at least 200, according to a tour company website. So, I had a lot of choices while making this list, which was largely inspired by our recent look at "State of Play". My instinct was to put "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" at the top of the list, but here's the rub: it wasn't filmed in DC. Background shots were taken in the city and projected onto a screen in Hollywood. Learn something new everyday, no? Here's a guide to sites used in a few of my favorite Washington-centric films, but please send more via the tipline.

Where the Preppies Play: Sports in DC

Spring has arrived in DC, and that means it's time for everyone to pop their collars, and pull out the old yacht for a turn or two on the Potomac. Sadly, I do not jest. There are youngin's in this town who really do own boats and horses and tennis whites. Here's your guide to playing Buffy and Bentley for a day. Any other sporty spots we've missed? Send it to the tipline. More »

DC Movie Map: 'State of Play'

DC celebrity sightings usually involve James Carville, Mary Matalin, and a plate of pasta at CafĂ© Milano. But this month, Washingtonians are getting a treat straight from Hollywood: some misguided director has decided to use our fair city to film State of Play, originally a BBC series. Now everyone has their "I saw Ben Affleck drinking coffee! I drink coffee, too!" story. The movie features the archetypal cast of Washington creatures: the aforementioned Affleck plays a philandering Congressman whose mistress is found dead, Rachel McAdams is the intrepid reporter who writes about the murder, and — as far as I can tell — Russell Crowe is a homeless-looking dude who skulks around U Street and Mount Pleasant. Jason Bateman, Robin Wright and Helen Mirren also have roles. Here's your own Hollywood map to the Washington stars.

Finding Suburbia in Downtown DC

Something big and red has muscled its way into the Columbia Heights neighborhood, and it's forcing all of us to rethink what we want out of life. Thank you, Target, for making me wonder if I should break down and get a minivan... or a Land Rover... or a hideous Subaru Outback. And props for prompting my best friend to ponder buying a house in — gasp — Fairfax. The new Target is the latest suburban chain to move into our city and make our once gritty, diverse urban experience a little more generic. Bed, Bath and Beyond showed up in Chinatown a couple of years ago, and this spring Harris Teeter is opening a branch in Adams Morgan. Here's a guide to suburban DC that will have you skipping out on all-nighters at the bar and announcing that you've lined up "a pretty nice little Saturday. We're going to Home Depot . . . maybe Bed, Bath and Beyond," like Will Ferrell in "Old School." Let us know via the tipline if we've missed some prime spots to buy blenders and shower curtains.

New and Improved in DC

I think I've been living under a rock these days. I'm so far under that rock, that I've barely noticed all the awesome new bars and restaurants that have snuck into the city. Here's a run-down of what's new — and what's been improved — in DC. And if I mention something that is so last week, my apologies. Clearly, I need to get out more, and you can tell me where through comments or the tip line.

Top Picks: Falling in Love with DC Again

A few weeks ago, the WaPo, as we affectionately call our local rag, came up with a list of activities in the District that will help us jaded old-timers rediscover the heart of our city. I've hand-picked a few from their list and added more of my own. Who said DC ain't got no soul. More »

DC's Best Museum Eats

After living in Washington for nearly five years, I have a very laissez-faire attitude toward our free museums. Occasionally, I'll hit up a blockbuster exhibit at the National Gallery or concede to take an out-of-town visitor to the Air and Space Museum. That said, there's one museum feature I never tire of: the fabulous food that's worth a trip to the National Mall just to grub. Here are a few places to grab some good eats, and if I've missed one, let us know via the comments or tips.

Where to Watch Political Football in DC

Boston has the Red Sox, New York has the Giants, North Carolina has NASCAR, and DC has politics. 'Round here, accusations, overstatements, and flat-out lies are as satisfying as a good old-fashioned tackle. But no time of the year is more exciting than election season. This cycle, things have started much earlier. Debates, primaries, and caucuses have dominated the headlines every week, and much like last night's football game, we DC folks tend to relive the verbal bitch-slapping that went on the night before for days, weeks, months into the future. Here are a handful of bars and restaurants where you can catch the pre-season with the rest of Washington's politi-nerds. If we've missed a spot, let us know via the comments or tips.

Finding Your BFF 4-Eva in DC

Awkward. You're in the middle of downward dog during Saturday morning yoga, and you notice a girl in the cutest spandex top you've ever seen. In fact, she looks like a lot of fun, like someone you'd want to grab coffee with after class. And you can tell from her warrior pose that she's probably really good at giving guy advice. What to do? Ask her where she got her top and pray she wants your number? Or stalk her in class every Saturday morning. Creepy? Maybe. Worth it? Yes, if it means she turns out to be the best BFF ever. Oh, the heartache of wooing a new friend, especially of the same sex. Here are a few estrogen-heavy places where you're bound to come away with a new lady posse just by showing up. If we've missed a fem-zone or two, don't be afraid to call 'em out in the comments or tips.

Finding God in DC

Is your godless soul bringing you down? Worried about all that fire and brimstone? Yeah, me too. Not to worry, though. Washington is full of churches, temples and other spiritual sites where you can cleanse your spirit and make up for all the blaspheme and sacrilege that goes on in this town.
