Debriefer: Comedian Paul Mecurio

Paul_Mecurio_b%26w_cropped_Small.jpgPaul Mecurio is comedy's resident virtuoso; after graduating with high honors from Georgetown Law, Paul ditched a bright future in law for ... well, an even brighter career in comedy. He's even got awards to prove it. Let's see the firm Willkie, Farr and Gallagher hand out Emmys. We caught him in a brief moment between shows in the midwest and two headlining nights at New York's Comix (this Friday 26 and Saturday 27) and got him to dish on politics and why he's gotta have his 3am hot dogs with a side of "coffee milk."

In the wake of the

In the wake of the Spitzer scandal, lawmakers are seeking to eliminate a loophole that makes prostitution legal in Rhode Island. The laws currently on the books in the state do not specifically prohibit prostitution as long as it "occurs indoors." According to the Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police, as things are now, "persons are free to solicit sex for money in newspapers and/or over the Internet as long as the conduct that is agreed upon takes place in private." Proposals to criminalize the world's oldest profession in Rhode Island have been unsuccessfully introduced several times in past years, but the latest anti-prostitution bill seems to have extra momentum following the Spitzer debacle. Thanks a lot Eliot! Nice job fucking things up for the rest of us! [ProJo]

Top Picks: Eating Providence

gourmet%20providence.jpgFood & Wine is launching a new travel/food site called Food & Wine Across America, combining user and editorial reviews of emerging food cities. The idea is that great culinary finds aren't just in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco anymore. Establishments in smaller locales can get great local or regional ingredients, and more and more big-city chefs are returning to their hometowns to open restaurants. for its kickoff, the new F&W site explores Burlington, Portland (Maine), and Providence. Though we're into the idea, we are still an urban site and can't dwell too long on the gustatory wonders of places like Burlington. Providence, on the other hand, is right up our alley. F&W's Providence picks and a couple more suggestions, after the jump.

Pic of the Day: Framing the City

urbancurator.jpgThe Urban Curator project involves a bunch of RSDYRISD grads running around Providence, putting gilt frames on urban objects and inviting the viewer to regard it as art. Ah conceptualism, you old dog you. These good natured crew is constantly looking for import and suggestions of work to be framed so check out their website or grab an old frame, a can of spray paint to paint the frame gold and make your own art.

Gaming the City

01032006.11.jpgPretty brainy piece in enRoute magazine about urban psychogeography as experienced through games like Pac Manhattan and "urban chess," the latter of which the article's author participates in as a white pawn. He spends his time "hunched beside a dumpster at the mouth of an alley opposite an abandoned brick tower that is jammed with junkies," waiting for his controller to phone in a move. Like a lot of experimental travel, I declare it more interesting to read about than experience, which I consider a definite compliment. Anyway, in the interests of full disclosure, thrill to my own perspicacious predictions about The Future Of Travel in the same issue of enRoute.
