St. Patrick's Day, Queens Style
Saint Patrick's Day is not merely a day for getting drunk with fratty douchebags on the Lower East Side (though we have been guilty of it on more than one occasion). It's really a day meant to be spent with surly, quiet Irish alcoholics, and for the real deal there is no better place than Queens. Queens and more especially Sunnyside, a neighborhood known for helping to launch the careers of the Ramones and hosting some of the first wrestling matches of Andre the Giant (thanks Wikipedia!), teem with Irish expats and charming, often filthy, pubs and dive bars. The jukeboxes are full of the Pogues, the Guinness is well poured, and the women are surprisingly hot. So this Monday keep it on the Sunnyside, always on the Sunnyside.

A NYC bar owner has
A NYC bar owner has banned the classic Irish tune "Danny Boy" from his premises. Shaun Clancy, owner of Foley's Pub and Restaurant, has refused to let the song be sung in his pub for the entire month of March, on the grounds that it's more befitting of a funeral than a bar. And the press is loving it: since banning the song Clancy has "done 60 interviews for news outlets in six countries." Smart move, Shauny boy. [via]
