The Best Thrifting in the Castro
Hold up! The Castro does secondhand shopping a little differently? Actually, not really, but truthfully it's not quite the same as, say, Upper Haight or the Mission. You'll probably pay a little more, but think of all you'll save in industrial strength detergent and post-shopping hand-scrubbing. Plus, you'll walk out the door with clothes that actually fit (referring to both boxy shirts and tight pants that cause third-party embarrassment).

The Best Thrifting in the Mission
In San Francisco, if you don't do the sidewalk thing then there is a good chance you thrift. And even if you're a fashionista making what you think is a bold stand against consumerism, you probably make far more trips to the store and accumulate more products than you every would if there were no such thing as $1 Wednesdays, half-off Sundays, and clothes by the pound. Obviously, the liberal arts educated, post-graduate work from laptop in café never have to see boss or clients crowd is no match for the marketing savants behind Goodwill Industries and Thrift Town USA. We've compiled a list of places to drop your small bills in the Mission -- over and over and over. Also check out our Halloween Costume special

Thrifting in Brooklyn
Now, there's nothing wrong with a proper vintage boutique. At those places, New Yorkers can find gorgeous Ferragamo riding boots, antique china, the perfect bomber jacket, or a sweet 1970's low-framed couch. There are times, on the other hand, when either the finances or the accessibility become burdensome and it seems a good choice to go thrifting. Thrifting in New York is just about the only civilized thing to do after you've had a long, hung-over brunch with friends (right next to loitering in parks or straight up passing out in your living room) and is a nice way to say 'I want to spend time with you', without actually having to communicate with your companions. No matter the occasion, thrifting brings out our most creative aesthetic personalities and leaves us with enough money in our wallet for an ice cream and a ticket to the cinema. Let the rummaging begin...

Sydney's Recycled Clothing
They say one woman's trash is another woman's treasure, and this is certainly the case at Sydney's secondhand clothing stores. While some would sneer at the prospect of sifting through someone else's cast-offs, others are happy to trawl for hours for bargain finds they can then label as "vintage" or "retro." Inner-city Surry Hills and Darlinghurst are some of the best places to find recycled gems, including once- or never-worn designer duds and quirky accessories. Shopping at some of these stores is a great way for travelers and anyone on a budget to mix up their wardrobe without having to sacrifice weekend cocktails. You may even be able to sell or swap your existing gear for updated versions.

Get the Jump on Halloween in SF
Halloween in San Francisco is usually a hell of a thing. It's like the High Holy Days for all the freaks, nerds, misfits, adventurers and anthropologists in the greater Bay Area. These folks, and everyone else, turn out in all their glory, to either indulge in their costuming proclivities or just soak up all the atmosphere. Managing to achieve The Perfect Costume is as much a matter of skill and timing as it is good imagination in this town, and don't be so foolish as to think you can start looking as late as the week before. Here are a few items for those who've never joined the scrum before.
