Thinking at Berlin's Giant Brain Library

Friday, July 7, 2006

RR6916_t346.jpgThe Free University's Philology Library bulges up from the ground like a giant white thought bubble. In fact, the library which opened up last year is nicknamed the Berlin Brain. The brain behind this brain? None other than Sir Norman Foster, the architect/genius who built England's Millenium Bridge. Foster designed the structure with an eye toward sustainability. 700,000 books are housed in a white dual-layered membrane of aluminum and glass that allows for natural light to pass through and fresh air to circulate.
