Battling the Munchies in Weinbergswegpark

volkspark200.jpgBerlin's Second Most Dangerous Place!!! Like most of the BZ's headlines, it screams with shock and panic from the newsstand. Berlin's favorite tabloid reports that according to a recently compiled police report the deceptively green and peaceful oasis of Volkspark Weinbergswegpark is apparently a hell on earth where soulless drug zombies and their cruel masters prey on poor unsuspecting Mitte residents. And here I'd always thought the greatest dangers there were being run down by crazed tricycling toddlers, bruises from errant frisbees, and the assaults on my delicate sensibilities by sight of curiously clothes-free retirees. But those hopelessly hip and beautifully banal weed smokers that clog up the Liegewiese on sunny days with their exposed flesh and wild hair must get their vegetables from somewhere! Now one fellow's drug problem is another's business opportunity -- so it comes as no surprise that the streets around the park provide several tasty eateries to pacify the most ravenous of pot-heads. Grab your smokeables and a fistful of cash and come down Weinbergsweg to sate your mysteriously sudden hunger.

La Focaccaria

Fehrbelliner Straße 24 10119 Berlin, Germany 030 / 44 03 27 71

Focaccia. That's it. That's all. Focaccia. Focaccia with veggies. Focaccia with meat. Focaccia with fish. Focaccia by the piece or by the platter. Focaccia for here or focaccia to go. Focaccia. Enough focaccia to give you nightmares if it wasn't so darn tasty. [link]

Galao

Weinbergsweg 8 10119 Berlin, Germany 030 / 44 04 68 82

On a sunny day, Galao is awash in a sea of jeans and t-shirts. The Portuguese café's baked treats and grilled paninis are a local favorite, along with homemade pastas and soups. The competition is fierce for the plastic green lounge chairs as the locals take to sunning themselves, coffee in hand, like iguanas in the Galapagos. [link]

Acud

Veteranenstraße 21 10119 Berlin, Germany030 / 449 10 67

If the police presence (or the hipster quotient) in the Weinbergswegpark is just too much to bear, run across Veteranenstrasse and take shelter here. A full service alternative culture venue, Acud offers films, art exhibitions, a "Mädchen Club" (sounds suspicious), and of course a cafe in its big blue box. [link]

Nola's am Weinberg

Gorki Park

Weinbergsweg 25 10119 Berlin, Germany 030 / 448 72 86

An old favorite, Gorki's is renowned for its Sunday brunch. German and Russian cuisine served in a warm, cozy atmosphere make it a perfect place to chase away a hangover over a steaming hot coffee. Breakfast treats just like Mama Stalin would have made them! [link]

Cafe Fleury

Weinbergsweg 20 10119 Berlin, Germany 030 / 44 03 41 44

Relax with a coffee and croissant at this cafe at park's edge. It's a recent arrival on the block and has been a big hit, as the local gourmands take to its French stylings. The outside seating area has recently been extended further down the block, so there's plenty of room to enjoy the summer sunshine and watch the occasional police raids from a comfortable distance.
