Blowing Your Wad on Wuhlisch

Wednesday, September 12, 2007

kopiwuhl.jpgFriedrichshain is supposed to be the epitome of "poor but sexy" Berlin, but a quick trip down the district's Kopernikuss and Wühlischstrasses makes you wonder just how impoverished the hipper Berliners are. You can't lob a stuffed toy Domo-kun for fear of hitting some white-painted boutique full of designer urban casual wear or a hairdresser's salon decked out in sub-Tord Boontje floral wall stencils. We went on a trip to window shop and scope out the territory for September 15, when 12 Kopernikusstrasse shops will be open till 2 a.m. for a late night consumer binge. The long and the short of Wühli-Kop after the jump.

1

Kickback

Kopernikusstraße 18
10245 Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany

Launched in 2005 to cater to local sneakerheads, Kickback covers all your obscure Nike, New Balance, Asics, Tiger, and Vans needs, with a few clothing rails filled with more Nike, Mishka, and Danish designer Wood Wood's work. The store is kitted out with old white-washed kitchen furniture from flea markets. DO NOT WANT: Totally nondescript hoodies for €100. [link]

Trash Schick

Wühlischstraße 28
10245 Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany

Trash Schick sells superior second-hand pickings from the neighborhood -- i.e., last year's hip hoodies and graphic-print t-shirts. WANT: Pale gold Chinese jacket. [link]

Aqua Gefühlsanstalt

Simplonstraße 8
10245 Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany

If you go by their website, entering this sleek, labeled-up outfit is bound to be disappointing because they promise you mermaids and live fish, and in fact all you get is a bunch of clothes. It's more conventionally glamorous than most of the shabby chic Friedrichshain gear -- think older hipster sister who has a proper job and a mortgage. WANT: White trench with repeating black pony pattern. [link]

UVR Connected

Gärtnerstraße 5
10245 Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany

If you want something you won't get at home, Berlin natives UVR knock out their own designs in the Uckermark area, just outside the city -- no mass production here. They also stock companion brands like St Martins, Bench, and Kickers. WANT: Corduroy skirts with contrast-color insets. [link]

Peccato

Simplonstraße 6
10245 Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany

Peccato is a little bit pristine and girly for Friedrichshain, but they have some cute knitwear and other pretties. A rack of red polka dot rockabilly sundresses looks a little out of place next to the pastel, lace trimmed camisoles, knickers, and silk frocks. WANT: Pink panties with apple motif and "Knackarsch" blazoned across the cheeks. [link]

Cultism Berlin

Simplonstraße 6
10245 Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany

Cultism Berlin stocks very cool stuff for boys and girls from local Berlin designers. We have a few picks -- Butterflysoulfire's futuristic hoodies and capes which double as skirts; Anja Ammon's bold but intricate graphic-print t-shirts and tunics. WANT: Stasi 2.0 stencil bags. [link]

Big Brobot

Kopernikusstraße 19
10245 Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany

If you're one of those people who knows your Domo-kun from your Ugly Dolls and has an opinion on Tim Burton figurines, this is the place for you. All kinds of knick-knacks and wind-up robots, plus books, posters, and clothes: Fenchurch, Boxfresh, Stussy. WANT: Skateboard with Osama Bin Laden's face on it. [link]

Herr und Frau Nitschke

Wühlischstraße 32
10245 Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany

This Dame und Herr specialize in jeans, with a good range of brands you won't find in the average mall: Pace, Blue Blood, Kuyichi, and Hells Bells among 'em. They also offer slouchy jersey tops and t-shirts to finish your look. WANT: Nudie jeans. [link]

Pracht Mädchen

Wühlischstraße 28
10245 Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany

Womenswear boutique that's a little heavy on Emily the Strange, Pracht Mädchen's also got Pussy Deluxe, Lee, Ichi, and Sweet Defeat among others, plus some nifty own-brand accessories. They have a nice selection of hosiery too -- fishnets in bright colors and footless tights. WANT: Mixx laptop sleeves in red with French slogans. [link]

Dazu

Kopernikusstraße 14
10245 Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany

Showroom for Ichichich messenger bags -- each one is handmade with a unique design stitched, printed, or appliquéd. A new collection comes out every two to three months, and though roughly themed with colors and designs, is diverse enough to satisfy every customer. WANT: this bag. [link]
